Does it feel like you or your child are always saying no?
PDA is often described as Pathological Demand Avoidance, but at Divergent Minds we prefer Drive for Autonomy.
For many neurodivergent people, demand avoidance is not defiance. It can be a nervous system response when autonomy, control, or emotional safety feels threatened.
Everyday demands can include instructions, questions, transitions, deadlines, self-care tasks, social plans, or even things the person genuinely wants to do.
Support should begin with safety, not compliance.
