Later this month, on 28th of July (10–11am), I will be speaking at an online event with the Dundalk Chamber of Commerce on a question that sits at the heart of much of my clinical work:

Why Do We Keep Doing Things That Don’t Truly Satisfy Us?
The Gap Between Achievement and Fulfilment in Working Life and Beyond

As a practitioner, I’m continually interested in how people relate to achievement, fulfilment and desire, and in the patterns that can persist even when circumstances change.
Many of us recognise the experience of moving forward while somehow finding ourselves in familiar places. The role may change, the relationship may change, even our goals may change, and yet something in the experience remains remarkably familiar.

In this talk, I’ll explore why achievement doesn’t always translate into fulfilment, why familiar patterns can repeat even when circumstances change, and what a different way of approaching those experiences might look like.
It should be a thoughtful morning of reflection and discussion.
If these questions resonate with you, or you’re interested in exploring them from a different perspective, you’re very welcome to join us.

AI is increasingly being used not only for information, but for companionship, emotional support, and even mental health advice. These interactions can feel comfortable. They are predictable, responsive, and remove much of the uncertainty that comes with relating to another person.

Learning about ourselves through others:

Yet it is often within this very uncertainty that something important happens. In relationships, we encounter difference, misunderstanding, and negotiation. Through this back and forth, we begin to understand something about ourselves, what we expect, what we fear, and what we are seeking from others. In a counterintuitive way, by trying to avoid being misunderstood, we may also lose the chance to discover what we want, which often only takes shape in relation to another person.

The therapeutic encounter:
This becomes particularly relevant in therapy. There are two people present, and something takes shape between them. At times, moments of uncertainty can arise. You may find yourself wondering what the therapist thinks, feeling unsure about how you are being heard or perceived, or noticing expectations that begin to emerge. These moments are not problems to be avoided, but stayed with and thought about together. They can begin to illuminate how you anticipate others, what you hope for, what you fear, and how you position yourself in relation to another person.

Through this encounter, patterns that repeat elsewhere can begin to take shape and be worked through.

This is something that depends on the presence of another person, on uncertainty, response, and difference. While AI may offer comfort and immediacy, it cannot replicate this encounter. It is within the space between two people that something new can take shape. If you are looking for psychotherapy in Dundalk, or would like a space to reflect on anxiety, relationships, and how you come to understand yourself in relation to others, you are very welcome to get in touch.

Life can bring moments that feel unbearable, loss, illness, or major life changes or experiences.

Often, it can feel like the only hope is to simply bear it. Psychoanalytic psychotherapy offers another path. Rather than confronting everything at once or digging deep into the past, it works by making inroads into what is difficult.

Through small openings, a hesitation, a slip, a dream, or even a glimmer of humour, we can begin to speak about suffering in ways that feel bearable. Humour, in particular, allows what is painful to be expressed indirectly, giving the psyche a protective way to approach what is difficult.

Rob Weatherill, psychoanalyst and writer, highlights this unique role of psychoanalysis:

“Ironically, psychoanalysis has come by default to claim a unique place in contemporary culture: to listen to the subject of the unconscious, i.e. the subject of suffering, of incompleteness, failure and self-hatred, but also of humour and creativity.”

Through this attentive work, listening in the gaps to: hesitations, slips, a dream, or a glimmer of humour, we can begin to form a different relationship with suffering, allowing what once felt stuck, lodged or unspeakable to slowly emerge. It is through these moments of creativity, dreams, and, humour, that we connect with what makes us uniquely human.

Sometimes, all it takes is a door left slightly ajar, a slight crack, a seemingly small opening, letting something new quietly begin to take shape.

If you’d like to explore this work, I offer psychoanalytic psychotherapy in Dundalk. You’re welcome to get in touch.

Psychoanalysis isn’t about becoming someone different, it’s about becoming who you were always meant to be, beneath all the layers life has woven around you.

Over time, life layers us with expectations, habits, and ways of being that aren’t truly ours. Psychoanalytic therapy is about noticing those layers, exploring patterns, and creating the space for your own voice,
desires, and ways of being to emerge.

It’s less about fixing or changing yourself, and more about rediscovering what’s already there without the added layers.

If you would like to get in touch to see if psychoanalytic psychotherapy is a good fit for you, I look forward to hearing from you:

Why do we keep doing things that don’t truly satisfy us?

Many of us notice ourselves repeating patterns, chasing experiences, or staying busy, even when nothing feels fulfilling. Often, there is something being played out that hasn’t yet been put into words, a part of our experience trying to be understood or remembered.

In psychoanalytic therapy, these repetitions can be noticed, spoken about, and worked through, so they no longer have to be endlessly relived.

Enjoyment is immediate and fleeting. Desire grows in absence, in ambiguity, and in the gaps where something is not yet complete. By paying attention to these gaps, the hesitations, slips, and ambiguities in speech, something new can begin to take shape.

Therapy offers a different kind of freedom, the freedom to at the level of your position, how you show up in the world, how you relate to yourself and others, and how you inhabit your life.

If you would like to get in touch to see if psychoanalytic psychotherapy is a good fit for you, I look forward to hearing from you:
