Life happens... and so do bumps and knocks!
Whether it's a child taking a tumble in the park, a knock during sport, or an accidental bump into the kitchen counter, most minor injuries can be safely managed at home.
Here's what I recommend for those unexpected knocks:
Apply a cold pack (wrapped in a towel) for 10–20 minutes to help reduce pain and swelling.
Rest the injured area and avoid activities that make the pain worse.
If possible, elevate the affected limb to help minimise swelling.
Simple pain relief, such as paracetamol or ibuprofen (if appropriate), can help keep discomfort under control.
Keep an eye on the injury over the next 24–48 hours. It's important to seek medical advice if you notice:
⚠️ Severe or worsening pain
⚠️ Significant swelling or deformity
⚠️ Difficulty moving or using the affected area
⚠️ Numbness or tingling
⚠️ A head injury followed by symptoms such as persistent headache, vomiting, drowsiness, or confusion
While many bumps are minor, it's always better to have an injury assessed if you're unsure. I can examine the injury, advise on the best course of action, and arrange further investigations if needed.
