Today I had the privilege of attending the 60th anniversary celebration of Cuan Mhuire. It was wonderful to be back and to see the connection that still exists between the service, the staff, the people who have come through its doors, and their families.

What stood out most was reflecting on the remarkable legacy of Sister Consilio she is some woman for one woman . Her story is truly inspiring. Through her unwavering belief that recovery is possible, she has helped countless individuals and families affected by addiction, always offering hope, compassion, another chance.

What began in 1966 as a small initiative driven by one woman’s vision and determination has grown into Ireland’s largest addiction treatment, supporting people on their recovery journeys.

It was a special day celebrating 60 years of an incredible service, a powerful mission, and the lives that have been changed along the way. Congratulations to everyone at Cuan Mhuire on this wonderful milestone. 💙

Many students won’t remember every lesson they were taught, but they’ll remember the teacher who encouraged them when they doubted themselves.

The teacher who saw potential in them.

The teacher who refused to let them give up.

I meet adults who can still remember a teacher who changed the course of their life with a few words of encouragement.

To all the teachers supporting students through school thank you.

The impact you have often lasts far beyond the classroom. ❤️

Firstly, I want to wish my own Abbie the very best of luck tomorrow 🤍

Over the last few weeks, anyone who has been through my house — especially Abbie and all her friends — has heard me repeat the same thing over and over:
you are more than points, more than grades, and more than one set of exams.

You can become anything in life once you put your mind to it.

To every Leaving Cert student starting tomorrow morning:
be positive, take your time, breathe, and don’t panic. Read the questions carefully and trust yourself. This is such a stressful time for young people, but no matter what happens over the next few weeks, your worth does not change.

One of Abbie’s teachers recently wrote her the most beautiful note reminding her how valued, respected and loved she is as a person, and honestly, that encouragement meant everything. Teachers who take the time to truly see young people matter more than they probably realise. That is what her school done for her !

Good luck to every student sitting exams this week — you’ve got this guys 🤍Banagher College

“Recovery changes what success means.
Not status. Not image. Not hustle.
Peace, presence, healing, and being emotionally available for the people we love — that’s the real win.

A great post by DJ Nikki K. Very proud of her and her recovery journey ❤️” your a great human .

There are things we regret. People we may have hurt. Moments we wish we could undo.

But healing isn’t just about stopping the addiction.
It’s also about learning how to forgive.

Forgive yourself — not because it didn’t matter, but because you’re choosing to grow beyond it.
Forgive others — not because they were right, but because you deserve peace.

You are not only your worst days.
You are also your effort, your progress, your decision to keep going.

Recovery is a journey . Forgiveness is hard.
But both are possible

Last night on The Tommy Tiernan Show, Luke Loughlin spoke openly about his journey through addiction — from alcohol and gambling to co***ne — and the emotional pain that fuelled it.

He made an important point: addiction doesn’t happen overnight. His mum watched him struggle for years — getting into trouble repeatedly, making harmful choices, and pushing away support before he finally got help. That escalation, and the fear and heartbreak families feel when someone they love is in danger, is all too common.

Luke spoke about how difficult it was for his mother to set boundaries and use tough love — not because she didn’t care, but because she had already seen him hurt himself, Watching someone spiral, getting into, risky situations or self-destructive behaviours, is deeply painful for families — and yet support, connection, and honest help are what finally opened the door to change.

The hardest part is accepting the help.

When I immersed myself in academic research on addiction, two Irish voices consistently stood out to me.i wrote about them many times on my academic journey. In Irish College of Humanities and Applied Sciences (ICHAS), Maynooth University & University of Limerick.

Ireland has been fortunate to have figures such as Jack Nolan and Eddie Mullins contributing to the national conversation on addiction. Both men, emerging from senior roles within the criminal justice system, have used their influence to articulate a more humane and evidence-informed understanding of substance dependence.

Eddie Mullins, former Governor of Mountjoy Prison and now CEO of Merchants Quay Ireland.

And Jack Nolan, former Assistant Garda Commissioner.

Both men come from systems traditionally associated with crime and punishment. Both have seen addiction at its harshest edges.

Yet what struck me most during my research was not judgment in their language — it was understanding.

As I studied addiction through neurological, psychological, and social lenses — genetics, trauma, co-occurring disorders, brain chemistry — one thing became increasingly clear:

Addiction is not about badness.

It is about illness.

It is about distorted thinking, hijacked survival systems, and often unresolved trauma.

When leaders from within the justice system speak about addiction with compassion, that carries weight.

Because they have seen it firsthand.

And when you truly sit with someone in addiction, you understand — this is not someone thriving.

This is someone profoundly unwell.
