(Ad) A Rebel and a Traitor by Rory Carroll is a deeply researched account of a fugitive and an intense manhunt. 📚 Through this one event, Carroll explores the tense and uncertain beginnings of the IRA, and the human cost of those early days on all sides.

It struck me that the incident at the centre of the book isn’t something most of us learned much about in school. 📚 It’s not one of the headline moments we usually associate with the War of Independence. 📕 Reading it felt a bit like uncovering a piece of history that was always there, just not often looked at closely.

That’s what makes the book so compelling. 📖 By focusing on one specific moment, it shows how fragile and volatile Ireland was in 1919. The war didn’t simply appear overnight — it grew out of individual decisions, small operations, and reactions that slowly escalated. 📚

What stood out to me most was how fair it feels. 📚 Carroll doesn’t turn people into simple heroes or villains. Instead, he shows the fear, the conviction, and the moral grey areas that shaped the time. 📕 You really sense the tension and uncertainty — that feeling of a country stepping into something that would change it forever. 📖

The individuals who have taken to the roads are representing everybody. Whether or not you think the way they’ve gone about it is the best way it could’ve been done or not, it’s important that we support them. And we let the government know that we support them.

One thing after another over the past six years has made it harder and harder for people to live their lives in Ireland. This is not the country I moved to 20 years ago, so much has changed. So much has degraded. The government is completely out of touch with the needs of the Irish people. The fuel prices is the final straw, it is the breaking point. It’s not just about fuel prices, it’s about the government being so flippant in disregarding the basic needs and wants of the Irish people.
