Feeling unwell before work? Staying home isn’t only about taking a sick day, sometimes it helps protect the people you work with too.
If you have a respiratory infection and feel unwell, HSE guidance is to stay home until you are feeling better.
Vomiting or diarrhoea? Stay away from work for at least 48 hours after your symptoms have stopped. This is particularly important if you work with food, children, patients or other vulnerable people.
And remember: different illnesses and workplaces can have different return-to-work requirements.

There are direct costs, such as sick pay, overtime and replacement cover and wider effects, including reduced capacity, delayed work and service disruption.
Convenient access to medical advice may help employees get appropriate support sooner.

Seasonal workers can be new to the area and may not yet be registered with a local GP.
When a worker becomes unwell, they may be unsure where to get help, and may feel that going to hospital is their only option, even for a less urgent concern. This can place unnecessary pressure on hospital services for health concerns that may be safely managed online.
The HSE recommends contacting a GP for less urgent treatment. Emergency departments should be used for serious injuries and life-threatening emergencies.ie works with farms, factories and other businesses to help their workers access appropriate online GP care when it is suitable for their needs.

Feeling embarrassed to talk to a GP?

Start with:

“This feels awkward, but I’m worried about…”

You do not need the right medical words. Explain when it started, what has changed, and whether you have pain, bleeding, discharge or a lump.

Sensitive symptoms are still health concerns. Doctors have a duty to protect your privacy, although limited legal and safety exceptions apply.

Do not delay urgent symptoms. Call 112 or 999 if you are seriously unwell or in immediate danger.

An online GP could be a good start.

Embarrassment should not stop you getting medical advice.
