HIIT Benefits

What is HIIT?
High Intensity Interval Training involves alternating between short periods of intense anaerobic exercise followed by short periods of recovery, often involving aerobic exercise.

What are the benefits of HIIT?

- Improves heart health, mental health and oxygen & blood flow.

-Lowers blood pressure.

-Increases Insulin sensitivity.

-Burn more calories than continuous workouts.

-Burns fat & builds muscle.

-HIIT can be done at home with minimal amounts of equipment.

-More time efficient.

-Due to the constant transition between aerobic & anaerobic state, studies have found little change in blood glucose during the exercise itself. However, this does not mean it won’t effect your bloods. Everyone is different and the best way to protect against hypos/spikes during exercise is to continually monitor bloods and have hypo snacks at the ready 💪🏼

5 Daily habits to help improve your blood sugars 💉

Ever wake up expecting your blood sugars to be in range but they are abnormally high? 😳

For many diabetics, there is an increase in blood sugar during the morning time, usually after 8-10 of sleep. This is called Dawn Phenomenon. ⬆️

It is due to the release of hormones such as cortisol and glucagon, which cause the liver to release glucose into the bloodstream.

It can be treated by additional insulin or by reducing the intake of carbs before bed.

Some things to consider before exercise.

-Type of Exercise 🏃‍♂️-
Whether you are resistance trainging/cardio/HIIT, each type of exercise is going to have a different effect on your bloods and it is important to understand these effects in order to prepare insulin and meals etc.

-Duration of Exercise ⏱-
Going for a 3 hour hike is going to have a much different impact on your bloods than a 30 minute strength session in the gym. Knowing how long you will be exercising for allows you to plan ahead in terms of pre-exercise meals and blood trends.

-Energy from last meal 🥞-
Knowing the contents of your pre-workout meal and how they are going to fuel your workout gives you a peace of mind while training.

-Blood Trend 📉-
Knowing what direction your blood is heading allows you to take the necessary actions to keep your bloods in range throughout exercise.

-Hypo Snacks 🍬-
Always have hypo snacks with you while exercising, no matter what type of training it is. Your bloods will never be the exact same as the last time you trained and you never know what external factors may effect your blood differently.

Anaerobic and Aerobic exercise have different effects on blood sugar levels;

-Anaerobic exercise, including sprints, resistance training and
high intensity workouts can increase blood sugars due to a
release in glucose rising hormones. In fact, a 10 second
sprint can have a lasting effect on glycemic control and can
reduce the risk of a hypo.

-Aerobic exercise tends to decrease blood glucose levels.
