We are thankful for the practices and rituals that offer a respite from the chatter, the conflicts, the overachieving. When a dear friend gracefully creates a subtle experience of drinking tea around finely crafted ceramics and a cultivated practice, we are reminded to pause and appreciate the quiet that such moments can bring.

It took a few months to pick out my vegetable guy at the shuk. I like to go in the off hours so we can banter. Usually I nod my head catching not all of what he’s saying. He’s patient with me as I stumble through what little Hebrew I can piece together. He lovingly calls his five children the mafia. I can relate because I too belong to my children. This man of faith once said that very little that happens is up to him. Perhaps that’s the place from where the loving vibe emanates. He says goodbye with many endearments that are too sweet to translate. As I walk off I look forward to our exchanges through the coming years (perhaps with less stammering in Hebrew on my part) but always with gratitude for the heart-warming few minutes with the man and his vegetables.

Cold season. When the child wants nothing but broth with lemongrass and ginger before heading off to school. Do take the warm pita for the bus ride.

The man said “no water!” Did I hear him right? It appears not all cut flowers need water. A week later they’re still in bloom and gorgeous. Shabbat Shalom.
