For decades, doctors and healthcare workers in India have been threatened, abused, assaulted, and attacked- often while trying to save lives.

Three out of four doctors have faced violence at some point.

Yet accountability has been weak.

Now, a new bill introduced in Parliament proposes the strongest protection yet for healthcare workers.

Up to 10 years in jail for serious attacks

Minimum prison terms for assaulting doctors or nurses

Verbal abuse, threats, obstruction of duty = criminal offences

Fast-track investigations and special courts

Non-bailable offences

Heavy fines + mandatory compensation

Strict timelines for FIRs, investigations, and trials

Mandatory hospital safety measures like CCTV and security protocols

This law recognises one simple truth: Hospitals are not battlegrounds. Doctors are not punching bags.

When healthcare workers don't feel safe, emergency care suffers.

When fear enters hospitals, patients ultimately pay the price.

This isn't about power.

This isn't about ego.

It's about safety, dignity, and the right to work without fear.

A step long overdue.

A conversation that must continue.
