*Lipid Profile: What's Included?*
A lipid profile, also known as a lipid panel, is a blood test that measures the levels of different types of cholesterol and triglycerides in your blood. Here's what's typically included:
1. *Total Cholesterol*: Overall cholesterol level
2. *HDL (High-Density Lipoprotein) Cholesterol*: "Good" cholesterol, helps remove excess cholesterol from bloodstream
3. *LDL (Low-Density Lipoprotein) Cholesterol*: "Bad" cholesterol, can build up in arteries
4. *Triglycerides*: Type of fat in blood, can increase risk of heart disease
5. *VLDL (Very-Low-Density Lipoprotein) Cholesterol*: Calculated value, indicates risk of heart disease
*Why is it done?*
- Assess risk of heart disease and stroke
- Monitor treatment for high cholesterol or triglycerides
- Screen for metabolic disorders
*What do the results mean?*
- Optimal levels vary based on individual risk factors and guidelines
- Generally, aim for:
- Total Cholesterol < 200 mg/dL
- HDL > 40 mg/dL (men), > 50 mg/dL (women)
- LDL < 100 mg/dL (optimal), < 70 mg/dL (very high risk)
- Triglycerides < 150 mg/dL
