Holding Space: A Mother’s Journey Through Communication & Everyday Life

Join us for a heartfelt conversation with Hima Bindhu Kandregula, mom to Darsh and Dhriti, along with Bindu Sripadaraja, mom to Sriram, as they share their lived experiences of parenting through communication differences and the emotional ups and downs that come with it.

This session is not about perfect answers—it’s about real moments, small wins, and the strength it takes to keep showing up.

We’ll gently explore communication, regulation, AAC, and what support can look like for both children and parents.

If you’ve ever felt unsure, overwhelmed, or alone in your journey—this space is for you.

✨ Honest sharing. Quiet understanding. Meaningful connection.

A snippet from a past webinar — a parent shares why topic-based communication boards alone can feel limiting, and what truly helps instead.

Communication does not happen topic-wise. We don’t only talk about “food” during snack time or “school” during class. Human communication naturally moves across ideas, feelings, memories, questions, humour, opinions, and unexpected moments. We jump from one topic to another constantly.

That is why AAC users need access to a robust communication system at all times — not just topic-specific pages.

A robust communication system is one that:
• grows with the individual’s language
• allows access to grammatical variations
• includes picture-based communication
• supports open-ended communication through keyboards or spelling
• provides quick pre-programmed phrases
• integrates multiple tools suited to the individual’s communication style

At Subodha – Communication For All, we advocate for multimodal communication because, at the end of the day, all of us are multimodal communicators. We use speech, gestures, expressions, writing, typing, visuals, and more — depending on the context and our needs.

AAC should not limit communication. It should expand it.

Nishant Sriram an autistic adult who uses different AAC tools to@communicate tells us why he thinks it’s important to introduce communication supporting tools early on in life. He says, he wished it was introduced to him as early as 2 years old which would have made him less anxious as a person. Take a note!

*ONE TOOL - MANY USES*

Our student is applying her newly learnt alphabet & phonics knowledge to spell words on Avaz keyboard.

She is also required to wear a unilateral hearing aid 🦻 so, as a preparation for that, we let her use AirPods paired with the device & she loved typing on her own & listening to it!

Some of the most loved features are the ‘Tone’ feature, vowels highlighted in a different colour, the symbols+text feature & finally the share button - sharing the message real time with her family members.

Our student loved using all these features! So, here we go - one tool, many uses. Literacy ✅ Language ✅ Joy of learning Real-time Communication ✅Acceptance of new aid✅

Q. Why does my child not initiate conversations or I don’t see spontaneous initiation of communication in my child/teen.
A: The initiation triggers to communicate for a neurotypical individual and a neurodivergent individual can be very different.
Interaction style contributes to how & why a child would like to initiate communication with adults. If a parent or professional’s interaction style is predominantly questioning or giving instructions, you will see limited initiation in communication. Talking to the child/young adult in an age appropriate manner and exposing them to age appropriate content and opportunities is important & opens up doors for interaction to happen.

When we find an individual’s strength & passion & make space for it, we move beyond looking at the child/individual as a mere recipient of therapy.
We create opportunities for the child/individual to be seen for their competence, passions, and unique identity.
