Internships are better when curiosity leads the wayđź’«

Prisha & Aakruti came to Inside Out as students of Psychology and Media, curious to understand how children communicate, how development unfolds and what it really means to work alongside a child and their family.

At Inside Out, internships are not about ticking a box on your CV. They’re about being curious, asking questions, observing closely, learning from real sessions and understanding the world of children a little better.

If you’re a budding clinician already walking the path of working with children — and still have the curiosity to wonder, question and see things differently, We’d love to have you come learn with us. 🤍

The best children’s books don’t just tell stories.
They invite children to join in.

Here’s one I keep reaching for in therapy. 💜

Comment “BOOKS” if you’d like my Debbie Tarbett recommendations 📚

This baby (Technically a toddler... but she’ll always be one of my babies❤️) first came to me when she was about 18 months old.

Today she’s four, creating and retelling stories that are completely her own.

What you’re seeing is the result of two and a half years of building the foundations first, supporting her sensory and emotional regulation, following her interests, nurturing connection, and letting child-led play shape the way she learned.

One detail you might miss: the pool is in one corner of the room and our story making table is in the other.

That wasn’t accidental.

For her, movement isn’t separate from language. It’s a pathway to it. By supporting her sensory regulation through movement, we also supported her access to language. The play was child-led; the environment was intentionally set up to quietly support her.

As she grew into an early reader, we leaned into that strength. Stories became a bridge for language, imagination, and connection. Her ideas led the story, and I gently scaffolded the language with predictable phrases and shared narration.

Sometimes the most meaningful stories aren’t the ones we teach.

They’re the ones children were always waiting to tell ✨

It was an honour to be part of this workshop alongside an inspiring group of professionals, sharing perspectives on communication, development, and supporting children and families.

I had the opportunity to present on “Play First, Communication Follows”, a topic very close to my heart, and discuss how communication grows through connection, regulation, engagement, play, participation, and relationships.

A special thank you to Dr Prabhavathi R , founder of Futurefoundation Prabhavathi , for bringing together such a thoughtful and collaborative platform for professionals and families. Future Foundations holds a special place in the field as the first, and perhaps the only, RDI-based school in India for Autistic Children, continuing to champion relationship-based and developmental approaches for children and their families.

I was also privileged to be part of a wonderful panel discussion alongside Dr. Prabhavati, Mr. Karapachu Vidyasagar, Cornerstone Therapy Solutions , and Ms. Mouna Siddappa from Mouna Siddappa . Together, we explored a topic that many families often wonder about: helping children understand and use WH questions in everyday life. It was an enriching discussion that highlighted the role of play, cognition, language comprehension, shared experiences, and meaningful interactions in supporting children’s ability to ask and answer questions naturally.

Here’s to more play, more connection, and more opportunities for children to communicate in ways that are authentic, functional, and meaningful to them ❤️

She’d stopped wanting to do blowing activities.

And for a while, I stopped asking.

Not because the goal stopped mattering.
But because her “no” mattered more!

Today, I brought it up again.

Not as a demand.
Not as a task to complete.

Just as a conversation.

We talked about how breathing helps us do the things she loves most—talking, laughing, sharing stories, and reading books together.

She listened quietly.

Then she pointed at me and gestured, “Gym.”

And suddenly, she made the connection.

“Like how I go to the gym to make my muscles stronger?”

Exactly.

We all work hard to strengthen the muscles that help us do the things that matter to us.

A smile.
A nod.
A shared understanding.

Then I asked,
“Can we try just five together?”

She agreed.

The most meaningful part of this session wasn’t the five blows.

It was the trust that made the conversation possible.

Therapeutic alliance before therapeutic demands.

Because children are more likely to attempt hard things when they feel understood before they are expected to perform. 🤍

This little autistic boy loves colours. He loves fans. He loves air conditioners. He notices things most people overlook.

As I listened, I realized he wasn’t simply naming shades of blue.

He was giving meaning to them.

The colours were organized by his experiences, interests, and understanding of the world.

The coolness of a fan.
The coolness of an AC.
Different feelings.
Different associations.
Different shades.

Moments like these remind me why I love working with autistic children.

Their thinking is often described as “different.”

But what if it’s not?

What if it’s simply another valid way of making sense of the world?

Sometimes children don’t think outside the box. They show us there was never a box to begin with!

As a therapist and play partner, one of the greatest privileges of my work is getting a glimpse into how a child experiences the world. Not to teach them a different way of seeing, but to be curious enough to learn from theirs and what a privilege that isđź’™
