What AI Can Learn from the Human Brain?

Did you know? While advanced AI systems like GPT-4 consume terabytes of data to learn, a child learns to speak with just a fraction of that. And while AI systems require significant energy for real-time tasks, the human brain achieves the same with 100 times less energy.

Fascinating, isn’t it?

Here’s how the brain is inspiring smarter AI systems:
1. Data Efficiency - The brain learns with minimal data, leveraging millions of years of evolution to adapt and generalize.

2. Energy Efficiency - Unlike AI systems that are power-hungry, the brain operates on sparse activity, conserving energy while delivering exceptional results.

3. Flexibility - The human brain seamlessly handles multiple goals and adapts to changing environments—something AI is still striving to replicate.

Why does this matter?

The convergence of neuroscience and AI, often called NeuroAI, is paving the way for breakthroughs in smarter, more efficient machines while also helping us unlock the mysteries of the human brain. This cross-disciplinary approach holds immense potential for advancing both technology and medicine.

What do you think—can AI ever fully mimic the brain’s remarkable capabilities? Let’s discuss it!

What’s common between a violin, guitar, ukulele, singing, and a keyboard?

Only music? No, then you’re wrong!

I’m not messing with you. Apart from music, these are some of the instruments or acts performed by patients while their skulls were open and neurosurgeons were exploring their brains. Yes, you read that right—these remarkable events have made headlines worldwide. Crazy, isn’t it?

But why do we, as neurosurgeons, do that?

It’s called Awake Brain Surgery or Awake Craniotomy. In certain cases, when operating near critical brain areas that control speech, movement, or even creativity, we ask patients to remain awake and engaged. By doing so, we map out their brain functions in real-time. This allows us to remove a tumor or repair an abnormality precisely while ensuring we preserve the patient’s ability to do what makes them them.

Imagine being a musician, and the surgery affects the part of your brain that controls fine motor skills or creative thought. By playing an instrument or singing during surgery, patients help us safeguard these functions. It’s a perfect synergy of art and science, where collaboration saves lives while honoring individuality.

Every brain is unique, and so is every person’s story. These surgeries are humbling reminders of the incredible complexities of the human brain—and how far we’ve come in understanding and respecting its mysteries.

And for all those bathroom singers out there—this might just be your moment to shine on the ultimate stage. Would you dare to sing your heart out during surgery? Let me know in the comments!

Neurosurgery is all about precision, accuracy, and the strength of collaboration. Sometimes, having two minds working in perfect tandem is far more powerful than relying solely on technology. In the delicate world of neurosurgery, the human mind and intuition often triumph over machines.

I am grateful to work alongside talented professionals who share the same commitment to excellence. Moments like these remind me why teamwork and trust are essential in the operating room.
