Every parent has had that moment watching their child and thinking, something feels different. But knowing what to look for, and when to seek support, isn't always straightforward.

We've put together a free age-wise observation checklist covering four stages of childhood β€” from babies to age 12. It looks at social communication, behaviour, learning, and emotions.

It's not a diagnosis. It's a starting point for parents who want to pay closer attention.

If anything raises a concern or confirms something you've been feeling, don't wait. Reach out to us at kanmanineurodevelopmentcentre.in. You don't need a diagnosis to start a conversation.

Speech delay doesn't always mean autism, but it always means your child deserves attention.

There are many reasons a child may speak late.
πŸ‘‰Hearing difficulties
πŸ‘‰Limited language exposure
πŸ‘‰Oral motor challenges

Or simply their own individual pace.
Autism is one possibility β€” not the only one.

If you've been worried about your child's speech, trust that instinct. Early support makes a real difference.

Does your teenager seem unusually withdrawn? Struggling with friendships, emotions, or sensory overload β€” but you can't quite put your finger on why?

Autism in teenagers often goes unnoticed because the signs look different from what we see in younger children. Teens learn to mask, adapt, and hide β€” which means the signs can be easy to miss.

Here are some signs parents and caregivers often overlook in teens.

If any of these feel familiar, you don't have to figure it out alone. Early guidance and the right support can make a real difference.

Does your child's behavior look more like autism or ADHD?

It's one of the most common questions parents ask us. And it's a great question, because while autism and ADHD can look similar on the surface, they show up very differently in how a child plays, focuses, and responds to the world.

A child with autism might play in a calm, repetitive, deeply focused way. They absorbed in their own patterns, following their own rules, often content in their own world.

A child with ADHD might jump between activities impulsively, struggle to finish what they started, react without thinking, and find it hard to slow down . They are full of energy but struggling to stay in control of it.

Neither is wrong. Neither means your child can't thrive.

But recognising the difference matters, because the right support looks different for each child. Autism calls for structure, sensory awareness, and communication strategies. ADHD calls for movement, routine, and tools to channel energy productively.

Early recognition means earlier support and that makes a real difference to your child's development and confidence.

Are you missing these 6 behavioural signs of autism in your 2 to 6 year old?
As parents, we're often watching out for speech delay as the main sign of autism. But behavioural and sensory signs are just as important β€” and much easier to overlook.
Here are 6 behavioural signs of autism in young children that parents commonly miss:

Flaps hands or rocks body
Walks on tiptoes
Lines up toys instead of playing
Upset by small routine changes
Very sensitive to sounds or textures
Intense focus on one topic or object

If your child shows any of these signs between ages 2 and 6, it's worth exploring autism early. Early support through speech therapy, occupational therapy, or psychological counselling can make a significant difference to your child's development.

Is your 2 year old showing any of these signs? It might be worth exploring autism early.

As parents, we notice when something feels different. But knowing what to look for isn't always easy β€” especially when autism can look so different from child to child.

Here are 6 social signs of autism in young children that are easy to miss:

Speech delay or repeating words
Doesn't follow your point or gaze
Rarely shares excitement with you
Struggles with back and forth play
Prefers playing alone
Plays near kids but not with them
Early support makes all the difference β€” and you don't need a diagnosis to reach out.

This World Autism Awareness Day, we pause to recognise and support every child on the autism spectrum β€” and the families who walk alongside them. πŸ’™
Around 1 in 127 people globally are autistic. Yet many still face stigma and barriers to care and inclusion.
With early understanding, consistent support, and nurturing care, children can feel more confident, understood, and supported in their everyday lives.
If you are a parent or caregiver, you are not alone in this.
Over the coming weeks, we’ll be sharing a series of posts to support children and the families who care for them. 🌱
