April is Head & Neck Cancer Awareness Month

Head and neck cancers affect the mouth, throat, voice box, nose, and neck. In India, oral cancer is among the most common β€” but it’s preventable and treatable if caught early.

Spot it Early. Treat it Early.

Check for these warning signs:
- Mouth ulcer or sore that doesn’t heal in 3 weeks
- White or red patch inside the mouth
- Lump in the neck or mouth
- Voice change or hoarseness lasting >3 weeks
- Difficulty swallowing or constant ear pain

Main causes: To***co, paan/areca nut, heavy alcohol, HPV infection, poor oral hygiene

Protect yourself:
- Say NO to to***co and areca nut in all forms
- Limit alcohol
- Maintain good oral hygiene
- Get HPV vaccine if eligible
- Do a monthly self-check with a mirror

If you notice any sign, visit a doctor or dental OPD immediately.

Your health matters.
Your mouth talks β€” listen to it

PMJAY report 2025–26 highlights a steadily rising cancer burden in India, underscoring the need for stronger prevention, early detection, and financial protection strategies. Cancer is now one of the leading public health challenges in the country, with incidence rates showing a consistent upward trend.

In recent PMJAY-related analyses, cancer cases in India, increased from about 14.6 lakh in 2022 to nearly 15.7 lakh by 2025, reflecting a significant rise within a short period.

The projected rise in cancer incidence is attributed to multiple factors such as population ageing, lifestyle changes, to***co use, environmental exposures, and improved detection mechanisms.

Common cancers like breast, lung, and cervical cancer continue to contribute significantly to the overall burden.

Time to expand screening and investing in preventive healthcare is the need of hour.
