Delighted to have participated in the National Workshop on “India’s Transition to Regenerative Agriculture: Policy, Partnerships, and Pathways” held in New Delhi on 2–3 June 2026.
I had the opportunity to join an engaging panel discussion on Crop Diversification & Market Integration, alongside distinguished experts.
The discussion highlighted the urgent need to move beyond water-intensive monoculture systems and accelerate the adoption of diversified, climate-resilient farming models. We explored how crops such as millets, pulses, oilseeds, horticulture, and agroforestry systems can contribute to enhanced farmer incomes, improved soil health, better nutrition outcomes, and greater resilience to climate variability.
I shared perspectives from the work being undertaken through the Agribusiness & Innovation Platform of ICRISAT and ICRISAT on strengthening value chains, promoting entrepreneurship, supporting farmer collectives, and creating market-led opportunities that make crop diversification economically viable for smallholder farmers.
A key takeaway from the discussion was that successful crop diversification requires more than production-focused interventions. It demands strong market linkages, value addition, private sector participation, enabling policies, and ecosystem partnerships that create sustained demand and profitable opportunities for farmers.
