Down Syndrome is a genetic condition that occurs when a person is born with an extra copy of chromosome 21. This is why it’s also called Trisomy 21. Normally, humans have 46 chromosomes, but individuals with Down Syndrome have 47. This extra chromosome affects how the body and brain develop, leading to mild to moderate intellectual and physical challenges.
Children with Down Syndrome often have distinct facial features, low muscle tone, and may experience slower growth or speech development. However, they are also known for their warmth, affection, and unique personalities. With the right medical care, early therapies, education, and family support, they can live happy, fulfilling, and active lives.
Down Syndrome is not a disease and cannot be “cured,” but proper care helps manage related health issues such as heart problems, thyroid disorders, and hearing or vision challenges. Today, many individuals with Down Syndrome attend school, work, and participate fully in society.
