Sama - Resource Group for Women and Health

Sama - Resource Group for Women and Health A resource group based in Delhi, Sama’s work focuses on enhancing and affirming health rights, gender equality and justice.

Sama was initiated in 1999 by a group of feminist activists who were involved in the autonomous women’s movement which views health from a broader perspective and finds linkages of women’s well being with various determinants of health. The founder members were a part of Shodhini – a collective that had come together in the 1980s to explore meaningful, women-oriented, simple, natural and cost effe

ctive alternatives in health that would be committed towards increasing women’s control over their own resources. Sama means “equality” in Sanskrit and other Indian languages. Our logo also symbolizes equality which is an intrinsic part of Sama’s philosophy and vision. Sama’s current work areas include: Public Health, Right to Health and Health Care; Adolescent Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights,Medical and Reproductive Technologies including Commercial Surrogacy; Ethics in Clinical Trials and Access to Medicines; Gender Based Violence: A Public Health Issue; Young Women and Mental Health; Early Marriage and Health; Population; Policies and Two Child Norm and Bioethics.

Mental health and Sickle Cell Disease are rarely spoken about together — but for women and girls living with SCD, anxiety, isolation, and grief are part of everyday life. Through our work with women and girls from marginalised communities, we've seen how mental health remains one of the most neglected dimensions of the disease: unacknowledged by families, invisible in policy, unaddressed by healthcare.
This piece is an attempt to bring those experiences to the centre.

On this 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡 𝐃𝐚𝐲, 𝟕𝐭𝐡 𝐀𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐥 we are sharing two zine posters on Sickle Cell Disease (SCD), a condition that sits at the intersection of health, equity, and social justice, and one that public health systems have long failed to adequately address.
These zines move beyond the biomedical framework to capture what it means to live with SCD - the psychosocial burden it carries, the communities that hold people through it, and the deeper questions of wellbeing, identity, and belonging.
People living with SCD continue to navigate health systems marked by provider bias, gaps in psychosocial support and fragmented care.
On this World Health Day, 𝐰𝐞 𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐨𝐧 𝐩𝐮𝐛𝐥𝐢𝐜 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡 𝐬𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐯𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐚𝐝𝐝𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐛𝐢𝐚𝐬𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐦𝐨𝐯𝐞 𝐭𝐨𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐬 𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐥𝐲 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐡𝐞𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐯𝐞, 𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬-𝐛𝐚𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐰𝐡𝐢𝐜𝐡 𝐢𝐬 𝐩𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐜𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐜 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐚𝐟𝐟𝐢𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞.

Gender Based Violence (GBV) is multifaceted, complex, and layered. As we continue to resist the structures that uphold GBV, we also recognise the importance of strengthening and building ecosystems that acknowledge these intersectional identities and intersecting issues that enable affirmative responses and centre care.

Sama organised a one day session with Delhi based organisations working on gender, GBV and SRHR themes, at both community and advocacy levels on December 9, 2025 as part of the 𝟏𝟔 𝐃𝐚𝐲𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐀𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐬𝐦 𝐚𝐠𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐭 𝐆𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫 𝐁𝐚𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐕𝐢𝐨𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐂𝐚𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐢𝐠𝐧. By sharing our collective struggles and making visible the threads of shared challenges, goals, and complementary spaces, we stand in solidarity with each other, and with people across regions against GBV and against all forms of oppression.

Sama organised a one-day state-level workshop in Raipur, Chhattisgarh on 'Sickle Cell Disease (SCD): A Social & Gender Issue and Perspectives.' The workshop served as a space for diverse groups - including community-based organizations (CBOs), activists, frontline workers, and healthcare providers to come together, exchange knowledge and experiences, and explore possibilities for collective engagement on SCD through a gender justice lens.

Mitanins working at the grassroots level shared their experiences with the screening processes and highlighted the lack of accurate information and awareness around Sickle Cell Disease (SCD). Some participants spoke about their lived experiences with SCD, including the challenges in accessing care and navigating systems for provisions such as the disability certificate.

The discussions also highlighted gendered experiences of living with SCD and the implications of existing policy frameworks. Stigma and shame imposed on people due to gaps in building public awareness about SCD, and its role in perpetuating myths and gendered discrimination - were some other key issues highlighted through the sharings by participants.
