ORAL CARE: Know tongue problem basics

Though often hailed as "the strongest muscle in the body," the tongue is made up of a group of muscles that allow us to taste food, swallow, and talk. A healthy tongue is pink and covered with small nodules called papillae.

Because you use your tongue constantly, it can be frustrating and uncomfortable when you experience tongue problems, including discoloration and soreness. There are a variety of causes for a number of common tongue symptoms. Fortunately, the majority of tongue problems are not serious and most can be resolved quickly.

In some instances, though, a discolored or painful tongue can indicate more serious conditions, including vitamin deficiencies, AIDS, or oral cancer. For this reason, it is important to seek medical advice if you have any ongoing problems with your tongue.

What Causes a White Tongue?
There are a number of things that can cause a whitish coating or white spots to develop on the tongue, including:

Leukoplakia. This condition causes cells in the mouth to grow excessively. That, in turn, leads to the formation of white patches inside the mouth, including on the tongue.

Oral thrush. Also known as candidiasis, oral thrush is a yeast infection that develops inside the mouth. The condition results in white patches that are often cottage cheese-like in consistency on the surfaces of the mouth and tongue. Oral thrush is more likely to occur after the use of antibiotics, which may kill the "good" bacteria in the mouth. Eating plain yogurt with live and active cultures may help restore the proper fauna in your mouth.

Oral lichen planus. If you have a network of raised white lines on your tongue that has a lace-like appearance, you may be suffering from oral lichen planus. Doctors are often unable to determine the cause of this condition, which often resolves on its own. Practicing proper dental hygiene, avoiding to***co, and limiting your intake of foods that cause irritation to your mouth may helpful.

There are some foods that are especially harmful for your teeth and having these can lead to several problems.

Candies, caramel, long-lasting sweets
Since hard candies stick and cling tenaciously to the surfaces of your teeth and also take a long time to dissolve, it is very harmful.

Acidic foods
If you thought sucking on lemon wedges is a home-remedy for tooth whitening then you need to rethink, because it is very harmful. After eating oranges, lemons, tomatoes and grapefruit, teeth should be rinsed thoroughly.

Chewable pills
There are chewable vitamin tablets that have concentrated acids which harm teeth as they clings to them. Even health drinks and vitamin waters are bad for dental health.

Starchy foods
We tend to consume a lot of junk, starchy food without knowing the after-effects. Potato chips, white bread, pizza, pasta and burgers can easily get lodged between teeth and in the crevices between two teeth. Agreed they are not sweet nor sugary but the starch in these foods soon begin converting into sugar almost immediately because of the predigestive process that begins in our mouths. The sugar is harmful and our enamel starts becoming decalcified.

Sodas, sports drinks
Sugary drinks like carbonated beverages, sports drinks are especially bad for teeth if one has them regularly. Soft drinks are the leading source of added sugar among children and adolescents. Besides being laden with sugar, most soft drinks contain phosphoric and citric acids that erode tooth enamel.

Sipping on a sugary beverage continuously for hours is very harmful, drinking it all at once is at least better.

Dried fruits
In between your meals you snack on a packet of dried fruits instead of a processed fruits — you are unaware that even dried fruits can be harmful for our teeth because of their concentrated sugar content and stickiness. Dried raisins, prunes, apricots, anjeer are gummy. So, parts of them easily adhere to teeth and the sugar in them encourage bacteria in the mouth that erodes tooth enamel.

Alcohol and wine
Saliva in our mouth helps to wash away food particles and protect against acidic foods and since alcohol suppresses the production of saliva, it is harmful for teeth, may lead to gum disease and even mouth cancer. Dr Jaradi says, "If taken in excess, acidic composition of wines dissolves enamel, makes teeth porous and easily stained."

And ones that are good...

Water
This is indispensable. You should rinse your mouth with water every time you eat or drink (hot/cold beverages).

Milk products
Milk, curd, paneer, cheese have essential vitamins and minerals. They can replenish the calcium needed for teeth health.

Fruits and vegetables
High-fibre foods can actually scrub your teeth clean. Fruits and vegetables that are crunchy and juicy like cucumber, watermelons, muskmelons apples, pears have water content that offsets the fructose.

Nuts
Vitamins, minerals, calcium, iron, potassium, zinc and other nutrients present in nuts like almonds, walnuts, cashews and peanuts are good for your teeth.

Green tea
A warm cup of green tea has polyphenol that helps suppress bacteria and can help fight cavities and plaque. Coffee and cocoa are also beneficial.

Important!
Don't brush your teeth right after drinking or eating something acidic — a sugary carbonated beverage — otherwise the enamel erodes away faster. Rinse with water thoroughly, wait for around half-an-hour to let the natural saliva do its job, and then brush.

Start your own anti aging program
through good daily dental hygiene

Despite the daily dental hygiene nuts and bolts of rinsing, brushing, and flossing; which you already know and hopefully do. Here are some other tips can help hold off the effects of aging as well and keep roughly 33% of your face looking more youthful:
1. Rinse your mouth after every meal or glass of wine, whether red or white. White wine has acids that pe*****te the enamel, allowing staining and decaying food particles to pe*****te more easily. While on the other hand, red wine creates only superficial staining. However, regardless of whatever you eat or drink, rinsing your mouth with water and swallowing after every meal and drink can help to minimize residue, as well as reduce staining and tooth decay.
2. Chew sugarless gum. As we age, our salivary glands shrink and produce less saliva, this in turn lessens one of our mouth's best defenses against tooth decay. However, chewing gum can help get that saliva going again.
3. Floss down into your gums, not just between your teeth. Plaque and bacteria can get stuck in those voids, causing inflammation and decay.
4. Ask your dentist to check the state of your fillings. Every filling eventually has to be replaced at some point and time. Silver, or amalgam, lasts between 10 and 20 years, so your childhood dental work may be overdue for replacement. Fresh fillings can help prevent tooth decay and loss - and, down the road, root canals and implants.
5. Consider orthodontics if your teeth have shifted significantly. Your jaw is constantly shifting along with your teeth, and left unchecked, this could create a collapsed look for you. Invisalign or behind-the-teeth braces are the subtlest options for grown-ups. The investment may not be small, but the long-term pay off is by far worth it! We even offer in-house financing plans for more expensive procedures like these.
So start your own anti aging program through good daily dental hygiene, as well as these other tips, and you'll be very thankful you did so as the years continue to roll on but your look remains the same.......
