Last night we opened ๐๐๐ฆ๐๐ฌ๐ญ๐ ๐๐๐ง๐ญรฉ โ a new series of live patient-education talks from India, every two weeks, an AVF Care Workshop initiative. It picks up where the 18th workshop in Quatre Bornes left off in August, and it will not stay with kidneys: other specialities join from Session 2.

Four routes researchers are working on right now:
Wear it โ a wearable dialysis machine. A human study ran in 2016; the next hurdle is everyday reliability.
Implant it โ a silicon filter with living kidney cells. A prototype has made urine in a pig. Still preclinical.
Another donor โ a gene-edited pig kidney. One patient lived 271 days without dialysis on one before receiving a human kidney. Formal trials are under way.
Grow tissue โ kidney tissue from stem cells. Filtration shown in mice; human scale is the next step.
Real progress. No delivery date.
Two numbers stayed with the room: 624 hours a year in the dialysis chair โ three sessions, four hours, 52 weeks. And worldwide, around 5 million people live on dialysis or a transplant, while about 110,000 kidney transplants are done in a year โ the WHO estimates that covers barely a tenth of the need.
So the session ended where every AVF Care Workshop ends: the fistula on your arm is the artificial kidney you already have. Protect it.
Replay on this page. Session 2 โ Wednesday 30 September, 9:00 PM Mauritius / 10:30 PM India: the diabetic foot โ prevention and early healing. Free. Bring your questions.
Thank you, Francesca Maleco Wai Choon @, for anchoring the Mauritius side, and Dr Trisha Sachan Misra & for joining.
