Many people who bring their relatives to the emergency of a hospital are hesitant to admit the patient in the ICU fearing that the hospital is doing it to make money. Attendants of many patients who are admitted in the ICU are hesitant to allow the patient to be put on a ventilator thinking that once a patient goes on the ventilator, there is no coming back. This is a widespread belief which is perpetuated by the sensational media reporting. There is no truth in this belief. The medical bills for the patients admitted in the ICU are definitely higher than those who are in the ward as the services given in the ICU are much more. Ventilator is one of the most important life saving device in the ICU which helps the patient to breathe. Patients who have lung infection would do well by going on the ventilator. This allows their lungs to get rest and get better.
