Neck pain may not be the only symptom associated with cervical instability.
When the ligaments supporting the upper cervical spine become lax, the joints may move more than they should. This excessive movement can increase muscle guarding, irritate pain-sensitive structures, disturb neck-position signals and, in some cases, affect nearby cervical nerves.
Possible symptoms may include:
• Neck pain and stiffness
• Base-of-skull or occipital headaches
• A heavy or difficult-to-support head
• Dizziness, imbalance or motion sensitivity
• Visual strain
• Brain fog and poor concentration
• Arm pain, tingling, numbness or weakness
Your brain maintains balance by comparing information from three main systems: the eyes, inner ear and cervical proprioceptors—the position sensors in the neck. When these signals do not match, a person may experience dizziness, unsteadiness or visual discomfort.
Treatment should not focus only on temporarily reducing symptoms. The aim is to identify the involved cervical level, understand the mechanics and develop an appropriate plan to improve stability and function.
