MTP Act in India (MTP = Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act)
The Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTP) Act, 1971 is the law that governs abortion in India. It has been amended several times, most importantly in 2021, to expand access and clarify rules.
🔹 Key Purpose
The Act allows safe and legal abortion under specific conditions to protect:
The woman’s life and health
Her mental well-being
Situations involving r**e, contraceptive failure, or fetal abnormalities
🔹 Time Limits (as per 2021 amendment)
Up to 20 weeks
→ Allowed with the opinion of 1 registered medical practitioner
20 to 24 weeks
→ Allowed for certain categories (r**e survivors, minors, etc.)
→ Requires opinion of 2 doctors
Beyond 24 weeks
→ Allowed only in case of substantial fetal abnormalities
→ Requires approval from a Medical Board
🔹 Who Can Seek Abortion?
Any woman (including unmarried women after amendment)
