Digestive cancers remain among the leading causes of cancer deaths globally.
The latest UEG position paper highlights a clear shift toward risk-based screening rather than β€œone-size-fits-all” testing.
Key recommendations:
Gastric cancer: targeted H. pylori screen-and-treat in high-incidence regions and high-risk individuals
Colorectal cancer: organised population screening using FIT with colonoscopy follow-up
Liver cancer: surveillance in high-risk patients, especially cirrhosis
Pancreatic cancer: no population screening β€” surveillance only for strong familial/genetic risk
Early detection saves lives, but screening must be smart, targeted, and evidence-based.
As clinicians, we also need to improve awareness, compliance, and access to structured surveillance pathways.
A timely and important position paper from UEG.

World IBD Day | 19 May 2026
IBD is not just about abdominal pain, diarrhea, or flare-ups.
Long-standing, poorly controlled inflammatory bowel disease can increase the risk of colorectal cancer.
That is why treatment alone is not enough.
Regular follow-up, surveillance colonoscopy, and timely intervention matter just as much.
Good IBD care is also cancer prevention.
On World IBD Day, the goal is not just awareness β€” but earlier diagnosis, better compliance, and long-term follow-up.

Gallbladder Polyp Found? Don’t Panic β€” Here’s What You Really Need to Know!

A gallbladder polyp on ultrasound can sound alarming β€” but in most cases, there’s no need to panic.
Nearly 90% of gallbladder polyps are harmless cholesterol deposits called pseudopolyps and never become cancerous.

The real importance lies in identifying the small number of polyps that may carry risk. Doctors carefully evaluate factors such as:

πŸ” Polyp size
πŸ‘€ Patient age
🌍 Ethnicity
πŸ“Œ Single vs multiple polyps
🩺 Gallbladder wall thickness

πŸ“ Why size matters:
βœ”οΈ ≀5 mm β†’ Usually benign, routine follow-up advised
βš–οΈ 5–10 mm β†’ Monitoring or surgery depending on risk factors
🚨 β‰₯10 mm β†’ Higher concern, surgery often recommended

Not every gallbladder polyp needs surgery β€” but every polyp deserves proper evaluation.

Early detection, timely monitoring, and expert guidance from a GI-HPB specialist can help ensure the best outcome while avoiding unnecessary fear.

πŸ‘¨β€βš•οΈ Detect Early. Treat Right. Stay Safe.
