🌍 World Health Day | 7th April 2026

Health is not just about hospitals, medicines, or reports.
For me, it has always been about peopleâ€Ļ their struggles, their stories, and their silent battles.

Every day, I see how health is shaped not only by diseases, but by awareness, access, and empathy. A mother skipping her own treatment to care for her child, a daily worker ignoring symptoms to earn a living, a young girl unaware of her own health rights—these realities remind me that healthcare is not just a profession, it is a responsibility.

This year’s message—“Together for Health. Stand with Science.”—feels deeply personal. Because real change happens when science meets compassion, and when awareness reaches every doorstep.

As a public health professional, I believe:
✨ Prevention is stronger than cure
✨ Awareness is more powerful than fear
✨ And timely action can save lives

Let us not wait for illness to remind us of our health.
Let us choose regular check-ups, healthy habits, and informed decisions—not just today, but every day.

Because health is not an individual journey—it is a collective responsibility.

💙 Let’s stand together, trust science, and build a healthier tomorrow.

World Tuberculosis Day 2026
By Dr. Piyali Shome
đŸĢ Yes! We Can End TB: Commit, Invest, Deliver
Tuberculosis (TB) is curable—but only if we act on time. As a public health professional, I want to share some very important and practical information that can truly save lives.
🔍 Recognize the symptoms early
If you notice any of these, don’t ignore:
👉 Golden 5 symptoms:
â€ĸ Cough for more than 2 weeks
â€ĸ Fever (especially evening rise)
â€ĸ Weight loss
â€ĸ Loss of appetite
â€ĸ Night sweats
👉 Other common (classic) symptoms: fatigue, chest pain, breathlessness, blood in sputum, weakness, etc.
đŸĨ Where to go?
Visit your nearest Block Hospital—there is an RNTCP (National TB Elimination Programme) Coordinator available.
They will guide you for proper testing and treatment.
đŸ§Ē Testing is simple and FREE in government setup:
â€ĸ Sputum (spit) test – the most important first step
â€ĸ You can give sputum at:
✔ Block/District hospital
✔ Through ASHA workers (ASHA didi) – they can collect sputum from your home
✔ ANM / CHO at Health & Wellness Centres
â€ĸ CBNAAT (GeneXpert) test for quick detection
â€ĸ Chest X-ray if required
📲 Nikshay Platform & Support
All TB patients are registered under the Nikshay portal, ensuring proper follow-up and care.
🍲 Nutritional Support (Nikshay Poshan Yojana)
TB patients receive monthly nutritional support for 6 months.
Also, many kind-hearted individuals and groups contribute additional nutrition support.
💊 Treatment (MDT – Multi Drug Therapy)
TB treatment is completely FREE and highly effective if taken properly.
👉 For Drug-Sensitive TB (Normal TB):
â€ĸ Duration: usually 6 months
â€ĸ Combination of medicines (HRZE initially, then continuation phase)
â€ĸ Must be taken daily, regularly, without missing doses
👉 For Drug-Resistant TB (MDR-TB):
â€ĸ Duration: 9–18 months or more
â€ĸ Special drug regimen under strict medical supervision
âš ī¸ Important Instructions:
â€ĸ Never stop medicines midway
â€ĸ Take medicines at the same time every day
â€ĸ Regular follow-up and sputum tests are necessary
â€ĸ Report side effects immediately to health workers
🚨 Remember:
TB is highly infectious. If one family member is affected, all close contacts must be tested.
đŸ’Ŧ Break the stigma
There is no shame in TB—only delay in treatment is dangerous.
Seek help early, follow treatment sincerely.
✨ Save yourself. Save your family. Save your community.
Together, we can end TB.

đŸĢ Yes! We Can End TB

đŸ‡ŽđŸ‡ŗ India’s Nationwide HPV Vaccination Drive – A Historic Step in Cervical Cancer Prevention

India has taken a powerful step toward protecting the health and future of our daughters with the nationwide rollout of the HPV vaccination program.

Cervical cancer continues to be one of the leading cancers affecting women in India, with over 1.2 lakh new cases and nearly 80,000 deaths annually. More than 80% of these cases are linked to HPV types 16 and 18 — both preventable through timely vaccination.

🔹 Targeting approximately 1.15 crore adolescent girls annually
🔹 High vaccine effectiveness (93–100%) against key HPV types
🔹 Free access through public health facilities
🔹 Strong cold-chain systems and trained healthcare professionals
🔹 Alignment with global public health recommendations

This initiative is not just a vaccination campaign — it is a long-term investment in women’s health, dignity, and survival.

As a public health professional, I strongly believe that prevention is the most powerful form of empowerment. Protecting adolescent girls today means reducing the burden of cervical cancer tomorrow.

Let us support awareness, encourage acceptance, and strengthen community engagement to ensure maximum coverage and impact.

Prevention saves lives. Awareness creates change.

Let’s Celebrate Valentine’s Day with Love, Not Violence 💗

Valentine’s Day should celebrate affection, trust, and mutual respect—not fear, control, or harm.
Violence in the name of love is a contradiction. If it hurts, it isn’t love. If it scares, it isn’t care.

True love protects, respects boundaries, and empowers—especially women.
On this Valentine’s Day, let us take a stand against all forms of violence against women and reaffirm that love can never be an excuse for abuse.

Let our relationships be rooted in kindness, consent, dignity, and equality.
Because love should heal—not hurt.

World Cancer Day | February 4, 2026
Today, on World Cancer Day, we stand in solidarity with every individual who has faced cancer with courage, resilience, and hope.
Cancer is not just a disease—it is a journey that tests strength, patience, and the human spirit. We honour survivors, remember those we have lost, and acknowledge the caregivers and healthcare professionals who walk alongside patients every day.
Let us continue to spread awareness, encourage early detection, support equitable access to care, and most importantly, choose compassion over fear.
Together, we can build a future where prevention is stronger, treatment is kinder, and hope is never lost.

Dr. Piyali Shome Attended HIV/AIDS Awareness Program at DNK RH, Basirhat II

Today, I had the opportunity to attend a meaningful and impactful HIV/AIDS Awareness Program at DNK Rural Hospital, Basirhat II. The event brought together healthcare workers, community members, and youth to strengthen awareness, reduce stigma, and promote a healthier, informed community.

One of the most beautiful highlights of the program was the Baul song performance, which delivered powerful messages on HIV prevention, safe practices, and social empathy through traditional folk music. The blend of culture and public health awareness made the session truly fabulous and inspiring.

Such initiatives remind us that awareness is not just information—it is connection, compassion, and community engagement. I am grateful to have been part of this meaningful effort toward spreading knowledge and promoting a stigma-free society.

Looking forward to supporting more such impactful programs in the future.
Together, let’s work toward a healthier tomorrow.
