What if your child isn’t “lazy” — but simply struggling to start?

For many children, the hardest part of homework isn’t the work itself. It’s getting started.

Instead of turning the evening into repeated reminders, arguments and frustration, sometimes a small change in how we approach the moment can make a difference.

Try the 3-minute rule tonight:

✨ Sit beside your child — not to supervise, but to participate.
✨ Say, “Just three minutes.”
✨ Take the first step together. Open the book, write the date, or read the first question.
✨ Once your child gets moving, step away instead of hovering.

And remember: the strategy should also change with age. What works for a 6-year-old may feel frustrating or childish to a teenager.

Most importantly, avoid labels like “lazy.” Starting a task is a skill that can be developed with structure, patience and appropriate support.

Change the start, and sometimes the entire evening changes. 🌿

Try it tonight and tell us how it went in the comments.

What if what everyone called “naughtiness” was actually a sign that a child needed help?

For years, Vishal’s intense anger, refusal, stubbornness, difficult behaviour and episodes of self-harm were seen as something he would simply “grow out of.”

But the difficulties continued and became increasingly challenging for the entire family.

After connecting with Dr. Aman Goel, the family began a structured approach that included not only treatment, but also family counselling and guidance on how to understand and respond to the child’s behaviour.

Within the first month, his parents noticed changes in the intensity of his anger, his ability to understand conversations, and the way he responded to situations.

One important takeaway from this experience is that supporting a child with behavioural or developmental concerns may require more than just medication—it can also involve understanding the child, supporting the family, and changing the way we respond.

If behaviours such as extreme anger, persistent difficulties, self-harm, or problems with social and daily functioning continue over time, don't simply assume that the child will “grow out of it.”

Early recognition can open the door to timely guidance and support. 🌿

When your child melts down, refuses, or does exactly what you asked them not to do, the moment calls for connection—not escalation. ❤️

In those difficult moments, try these four steps:

1️⃣ Lower your own volume first — your calm can help create calm.
2️⃣ Name the behaviour, not the child — address what happened without labelling them.
3️⃣ Give one clear instruction — keep it short and simple.
4️⃣ Postpone the conversation — wait until everyone is calm before discussing what happened.

And remember, parenting becomes harder when we are exhausted, stressed, running late, worried about marks, or carrying a difficult day home with us.

Sometimes changing one sentence can change the entire moment.

Instead of: “What is wrong with you?”
Try: “Something is difficult right now. Tell me.”

Children may forget the rules we set, but they often remember how we made them feel while setting those rules. 🌿

Sometimes what looks like stubbornness is actually a child trying to regain a sense of control. ❤️

If your child listens at school, behaves well with others, but seems to resist everything you say at home, it may be worth looking beyond the behaviour itself.

Constant instructions, repeated corrections and shouting can turn everyday communication into a cycle of resistance. Instead, try:

✨ Reduce unnecessary instructions
✨ Speak calmly and at close range
✨ Give choices instead of constant commands
✨ Spend 10 minutes together without correcting or advising
✨ Appreciate specific positive behaviours

For example, instead of simply saying “Good boy,” try:
“I noticed you kept your bag away without me asking. I really liked that.”

Parenting isn’t about breaking a child’s stubbornness.
It’s about understanding what the behaviour is trying to communicate.

And if these patterns persist across different settings and are affecting school, learning or friendships, seeking professional guidance can help with early identification and support.

A calmer connection can often become the beginning of better cooperation. 🌿

Most parenting mistakes don’t come from a lack of love. They come from loving a child and not always knowing what they need. 🤍

When a child has ADHD, things like forgetting, not listening, struggling to start tasks, or getting overwhelmed can easily look like laziness, carelessness, or defiance.

So we repeat ourselves louder.
We add consequences.
We compare them with siblings.
We say, “You’re fine, don’t worry.”

But what we mean with love isn’t always what the child hears.

Instead of thinking, “Why can’t you just do it?”
try asking, “What is making this difficult for you?”

Because sometimes the behaviour we are trying to correct is actually a skill the child is still learning.

And recognising our parenting patterns isn’t about guilt.
It’s about choosing to do something differently. 🌱

Save this post if you’re a parent navigating ADHD, and share it with someone who needs this reminder.

Sometimes, your child isn’t being “stubborn.” They may be trying to protect themselves. 🤍

Have you noticed that your child behaves perfectly at school, with teachers, or around guests—but becomes argumentative, angry, or resistant mainly with you?

That difference matters.

When a child repeatedly hears “Don’t do this,” “Stop that,” “How many times do I have to tell you?” their brain can begin to associate a parent’s voice with correction and pressure. Over time, the emotional response may come before the ability to calmly process what is being said.

So before asking, “Why doesn’t my child listen?”
Try asking, “What is happening between us when my child stops listening?”

Understanding the behaviour can be the first step toward changing the relationship. 🌱

And remember: not every child who shows oppositional behaviour has ADHD or another condition. A proper assessment is important before putting a label on a child.

A plant needs more than just water to thrive. 🌱
It needs earth, water, sunlight, air and space.

And interestingly, our bodies also need these basic elements to support overall health.

🌍 Earth — Spending time in nature and green spaces can support stress management and mental well-being.

💧 Water — Staying hydrated supports energy, focus, mood and physical performance.

☀️ Sunlight — Morning light plays an important role in supporting our natural circadian rhythm and sleep-wake cycle.

🌬️ Air — Slow, deep breathing can help activate the body’s relaxation response and support stress management.

🧘 Space — Our body needs time to rest, recover and restore. Quality sleep is essential for recovery, brain health and immune function.

Just like a plant cannot stay healthy with water alone, our body cannot depend on medicine alone for overall wellness.

Health is also built through the everyday basics — nature, hydration, sunlight, breathing, movement, rest and recovery.

🌿 Wellness begins when we start listening to what our body needs.

ADHD is not just about focus.

Sometimes, the deeper impact is what a child slowly starts believing about themselves after years of being called “hyper,” “careless,” “lazy,” or a “troublemaker.”

When repeated criticism becomes a child’s inner voice, it can affect their confidence, willingness to try, and belief in their own abilities.

The cycle can look like:

Label → Self-doubt → Giving up → Shame & anxiety → Low self-worth

The good news? This cycle can be interrupted. 💚

Instead of only asking, “How do we improve the focus?” we also need to ask:

“How do we protect this child’s self-image?”

A child’s behaviour may need support, but their identity needs understanding.

Swipe through to understand the signs, the cycle, and one of the most important things parents can protect: a child’s belief in themselves.
