When a Western lab announces that “medicinal smoke eliminates 94% of airborne bacteria,” it is celebrated as a breakthrough of science. When Hindu rishis said the same thing thousands of years ago and called it Homa, Yagya, or Yajna, it was mocked as superstition.
Same smoke. Same effect. Different storyteller.
Suddenly, herbs become “phytochemicals.”Fire becomes “thermal aerosolisation.”Chanting becomes “sound frequency modulation.”And what was once dismissed as ritual is reborn as research. This is not new knowledge. It is old wisdom wearing a lab coat.
For centuries, India’s civilisational sciences were reduced to blind faith because they did not come packaged in microscopes and journals. Yet the rishis were not guessing — they were observing. They saw that certain woods and herbs purified the air, that fire transformed matter, and that rhythm and breath calmed the human mind. They encoded this understanding in culture so it could survive through generations.
What we now call “medicinal smoke,” they called Yagya. What we now call “aerosolised antimicrobials,” they called havan samagri. What we now call “mental well-being,” they called shanti. The irony is painful: When tradition speaks, it is superstition. When science repeats it, it is a discovery.
This is not a clash between science and spirituality. It is a reminder that knowledge does not belong to one civilisation alone. The difference lies not in truth, but in the language used to describe it.
Perhaps the real superstition was believing that ancient people were incapable of science. And perhaps the real awakening is realising that some sciences were already living inside our traditions.
Not every ritual is scientific. But not every science is new.
Sometimes, the future is just the past — finally understood.
