🏹 The Cancer Treatment That Acts Like Lord Rama’s Arrow
Traditional chemotherapy attacks all rapidly dividing cells. While it destroys cancer cells, it also affects healthy tissues such as hair follicles, the lining of the mouth and intestine, and the bone marrow—leading to many of the familiar side effects of treatment.
What if chemotherapy could be delivered only to the cancer cell?
That is the idea behind Antibody–Drug Conjugates (ADCs)—one of the most exciting advances in modern oncology. An ADC combines a highly specific antibody with a powerful chemotherapy payload, allowing the drug to travel directly to cancer cells before releasing its toxic cargo.
In this video, I explain this concept using an analogy from the Ramayana: Lord Rama’s arrow—an arrow that seeks only its intended target without harming innocent bystanders.
We also briefly discuss two important ADCs that have transformed cancer care:
• Trastuzumab deruxtecan (T-DXd) – a major advance in HER2-positive and HER2-low breast cancers, as well as several other HER2-expressing cancers.
• Sacituzumab govitecan – an important treatment option for selected patients with metastatic triple-negative breast cancer and HR-positive/HER2-negative breast cancer.
As oncologists, we are witnessing a shift from “more treatment” to smarter treatment—delivering maximum benefit with greater precision.
