February is recognized globally as Biliary Tract Cancer Awareness Month, a time to raise awareness about cancers of the bile ducts and gallbladder—collectively known as Biliary Tract Cancer, including Cholangiocarcinoma and Gallbladder Cancer.
These cancers are often diagnosed at an advanced stage because early symptoms can be subtle—such as mild abdominal discomfort, jaundice, unexplained weight loss, or persistent itching. Awareness of these warning signs can lead to earlier evaluation and better outcomes.
Risk factors may include chronic biliary inflammation, gallstones, primary sclerosing cholangitis, liver fluke infection, and certain congenital biliary abnormalities. Individuals with long-standing liver or bile duct disease should remain vigilant and seek timely medical consultation.
Advances in oncology—including precision diagnostics, molecular profiling, targeted therapies, immunotherapy, and improved chemotherapy combinations—are offering new hope and improved survival for selected patients.
As oncologists, our commitment goes beyond treatment. It includes education, early detection, multidisciplinary care, and compassionate support for patients and families navigating this journey.
This month, let us:
✔️ Promote awareness of early symptoms
✔️ Encourage timely medical evaluation
✔️ Support patients and caregivers
✔️ Advocate for continued research and innovation
Early diagnosis saves lives. Awareness empowers action.
