Finding a breast lump can be frightening, but not every lump means cancer. 💗
Fibroadenomas are benign (non-cancerous) solid breast lumps made up of glandular and stromal tissue. They are the most common benign breast lumps in young women, particularly between the ages of 15 and 35.
They can occur in one or both breasts, and a person may have a single fibroadenoma or multiple lumps.
✨ The reassuring part: Most fibroadenomas remain completely benign, and malignant transformation is extremely rare - reported in less than 0.1%–0.3% of cases.
Do fibroadenomas need surgery?
Not usually. 🩺
For young patients with small, stable, biopsy-confirmed fibroadenomas, regular clinical follow-up and ultrasound monitoring are often all that is needed.
However, some fibroadenomas may need removal if they are:
• Rapidly growing
• Unusually large
• Causing pain or discomfort
• Associated with inconclusive or concerning diagnostic findings
Depending on the situation, surgical excision or minimally invasive treatment may be considered.
So, if you discover a breast lump, don’t panic, but don’t ignore it either. Getting it evaluated by a qualified doctor is the best way to know what it is and whether any treatment is needed. 🌸
