Do you believe in miracles?

Two and a half months ago, on the morning after the full moon after watching the sunrise, I stood under this sign at Kunjapuri Devi (one of the 51 Shaktipeeth’s in India) and said out loud that I wanted to go to Maa Kamakhya (the most powerful Shaktipeeth in India) because what India has given me is an undeniable truth, felt all the way down to the marrow of my bones, that my life is dedicated to the Goddess.

And like magic, an opportunity to organize a tour of India’s most powerful Tantrik temples has emerged. The itinerary came together effortlessly and four weeks into planning, we finally set the dates. At which point I discovered we will be holding puja in Maa Kamakhya on my birthday.

Returning to Rest

In a system that values only products we must always be producing (or consuming) to have value.

When was the last time you intentionally stepped out of that system?

When did you last give yourself full permission to stop being productive, to stop needing to consume?

Can you for a moment, right now...
let your eyes settle on some still point and rest.

How deeply can you inhabit that space?
How long before the impulse to DO kicks in?
What sensations there are you avoiding?

In order to be whole, creative, joyful, expansive...
in order to embody our vastness...
we must rest.

So ask yourself... what do I need to allow myself to pause today?

How do I give myself the space...
to rest?

Walking toward the beach, I have to squint against the electric lights to hold the scarlet on the horizon. Tomorrow I’ll bring my ganga dress to sit on so I can plant myself at the tide line and let the icy foam kiss my toes. I brought the herbs for offering but not the incense. First sunrise, still arriving. Tomorrow my love.

And still, as the sky brightens and all the motion of half a world of travel crashes against the edges of me, the quiet cultivated over three full moons in the Himalayas fizzes on contact with the constant buzz of the megalopolis and a crystal thought emerges.

“I did not come back to be part of this reality. I am here to stand for something different.”

And then there are no thoughts as a wordless song erupts from my open mouth and I sing my devotion to the sunrise over the sea.

There is a new way coming. Next time you are awake to see the sunrise, sing with me.

This body, who taught me how to love bodies, with their ripples and currents and unseen depths. Constantly in motion, ever changing and also timeless and eternal. Connected to history and mystery and story and song. Jai Ganga Ma. I love you forever.

With the news from home these last few days, it’s felt unimaginable to be creating content from this journey.

And as I sit with the grief for my country and the wonder of what I’ve seen the relationality between the two emerges.

Theyyam is an ancient ritual practice from the Malabar region of India. The performer prepares with hours of ritual chanting to induce trance, suppresses their personal consciousness with Toddy (an alcoholic beverage made from the naturally fermented sap of a coconut palm), and dons the ceremonial costume in order to receive the spirit of the deity, which then performs a ritual dance on behalf of the village.

For three nights, the village gathers to socialize, celebrate and hold space while the ritual progresses from sundown to sun up. It takes at least 40 people to perform the ritual itself while children sleep in their mother’s arms, young folks dart through the crowd and parents and elders greet each other. It’s an expression of collectivity. An investment in a shared reality beyond the seen world.

It is a demonstration of what we have lost to our disconnection from land, spirit and nature. The ability to feel into the vastness that creates an illusion of separation and touch the indivisibility that unites all of creation. The balm for the longing and fear and uncertainty.

Sending deep care and love for all those back home in the struggle. May you be nourished. May you be supported. May love win.

Welcoming the winter darkness. The opportunity to rest. To sink into stillness. To surrender knowing to the mystery. To open our hearts to grief. To warm our bones with solace. To find comfort in the quiet of the empty space. The pause between exhale and inhale before the new year begins.
