A little moment today made me pause.

I had just seen a 3-year-old girl at the clinic, examined her, given her treatment and was leaving. As I stepped out, she saw a man walking into the adjoining pharmacy and pointed towards him, saying, “The doctor is here.”
And it made me wonder…

How deeply ingrained is the idea that a doctor is a man?
Even after a woman has examined you, spoken to you and treated you, somehow when you think of “the doctor”, a man can still be the first person who comes to mind.

I’ve seen it with children. I’ve seen it with the elderly too.

Maybe it’s just a reflection of the stereotypes we grow up with, often without even realizing it.

And perhaps that’s why representation matters.
So that someday, when a child hears the word “doctor”, the first image that comes to mind can just as naturally be a woman. 🤍

Not every medicine works the way we hope it will.
Sometimes, a medicine taken to feel better can end up causing a serious reaction instead. Skin is often the first organ to show that something is wrong.

A patient recently came to me with a severe drug-related skin reaction, most likely after taking a homeopathic medication. They were quite sick when I first saw them, with extensive skin involvement that needed prompt treatment and close follow-up.

Today, they came back for review looking completely different. Healthy, smiling, and recovering well. Their gratitude was heartwarming, but more importantly, it was a reminder of how important it is to recognise drug reactions early and seek the right medical care.

A gentle reminder for everyone:
• Every medicine has the potential to cause side effects.
• “Natural” or “homeopathic” does not always mean risk free.
• If you develop a new rash after starting any medication, especially if it is widespread or associated with fever, swelling, blisters, or sores in the mouth, don’t ignore it. Get evaluated as early as possible.

The right treatment at the right time can make all the difference.
