If we truly want to address addiction, the focus must shift: from substance-centered narratives to patient-centered care, from stigma to treatment, from debate to understanding.

⚠️ When Fear Becomes a Shared Belief: A Message for Families & Communities

In many of our communities, it’s not uncommon to hear that someone believes they are being harmed through black magic or unseen forces. Sometimes, these beliefs start in one person—but over time, close family members may begin to feel the same.

This can be a sign of a mental health condition known as Shared Psychotic Disorder (folie à deux).

🔍 What’s important to understand:

The fear feels very real to the person experiencing it
It is not a sign of weakness, but a treatable mental health condition
Family members may unintentionally reinforce the belief out of concern or closeness

⚠️ What can happen if not addressed:

Repeated visits to faith healers without improvement
Increasing fear, anxiety, and distress
Confrontations with innocent individuals believed to be causing harm
Strained family and social relationships

🤝 What helps:

Seeking professional medical advice (doctor/psychiatrist)
Offering support without reinforcing fear
Keeping communication calm and non-judgmental
Understanding that early help can prevent escalation

🙏 A respectful note:
Faith and spirituality are important parts of our lives. However, when fear and suspicion begin to affect daily life and relationships, it’s important to also seek medical guidance.

💬 Let’s reduce stigma. Let’s support each other.
Mental health conditions are real—and help is available.
