A keloid is an overgrowth of scar tissue that develops after skin injury. Unlike a normal scar, it can continue growing beyond the original wound.
Common causes/triggers
Ear piercing
Acne or chickenpox scars
Surgery or cuts
Burns
Tattoos or injections
Sometimes even minor trauma
Typical features
Raised, firm, smooth scar
Pink, red, brown, or darker than surrounding skin
May gradually become larger
Itching, tenderness, or pain can occur
Common on earlobes, chest, shoulders, upper back and jawline
