The difference between normal school anxiety and a red flag
🎥 “My Child Cries Every Day Before School… Is It Normal or a Red Flag?” 😢🏫
“Doctor, my child cries every morning before school. Should I be worried?”
The answer may surprise you...
Many toddlers and preschoolers cry during school drop-off, especially when adjusting to a new environment. Dr. Dhivya Sree explains why separation anxiety is common, what parents can do to help, and when persistent crying may need further evaluation.
For many children around 2 to 3 years of age, crying during school drop-off is actually quite common.
Why does it happen?
💛 Separation anxiety
💛 New routines
💛 Unfamiliar surroundings
💛 Difficulty expressing emotions
Crying doesn't always mean:
❌ "My child hates school"
Sometimes it means:
👉 "I'm still learning to feel safe here."
What can parents do?
✔️ Keep mornings calm and predictable
✔️ Give short and confident goodbyes
✔️ Praise small improvements
✔️ Talk positively about school
✔️ Allow a comfort item if permitted
✔️ Work closely with teachers
Most children settle gradually with patience, consistency, and emotional support ❤️
🚨 However, seek professional guidance if:
⚠️ Crying remains severe for a long time
⚠️ It affects sleep or appetite
⚠️ Your child struggles throughout the entire day
⚠️ There are concerns about communication or development
You are doing your best as a parent.
Sometimes children don't need pressure...
They need time, trust, and reassurance ❤️
