When a ureteric blockage left her dependent on an external drainage tube, the goal was simple: restore normal urine flow and protect her kidney.

A 50-year-old woman from Kakinada first came to AINU Visakhapatnam with a ureteric stone and severe narrowing of the ureter. The obstruction had already led to infection and required immediate intervention. A PCN tube was placed to relieve the pressure on the kidney, and the stone was successfully removed.
But removing the stone was only the first step.
A long-segment ureteric stricture continued to obstruct normal urine flow, causing recurrent infections and leaving her dependent on external drainage. The narrowing was extensive and located close to major pelvic blood vessels, making conventional reconstruction particularly challenging.
The AINU Visakhapatnam team chose a robotic boari flap reconstruction, a specialized procedure that uses a flap created from the urinary bladder to reconstruct the damaged section of the ureter.
This became Visakhapatnam’s first robotic Boari flap reconstruction surgery.
Led by AINU Visakhapatnam's team of urologist, the team completed the complex reconstruction using advanced robotic technology through a few keyhole incisions.
The outcome: minimal blood loss, less postoperative discomfort, and a faster recovery. Her kidney drainage tube was removed before discharge, and she went home just three days after surgery.
A complex problem. A specialized reconstruction. And, most importantly, a return to normal urinary flow with her kidney function preserved.
