STEP-IN 💛 Humanitarian NGO with Slovak roots 🇸🇰
🩺 Healthcare • Mental Health • Capacity Building
🌎 Ukraine • Iraq • Syria
✨ Follow, join & be part of us Thank you!

STEP-IN began in Iraqi Kurdistan with the goal to provide healthcare to those affected by the nightmarish events the years when ISIS was at the height of its power. Today STEP-IN is a small (but mighty) NGO with missions not only in Iraq , but also in Syria, and most recently in Ukraine. We continue to provide medical aid in humanitarian and post-humanitarian contexts. We believe that healthcare should be accessible and affordable for everyone, especially those who have experienced crises and have been left disadvantaged by situations beyond their control. The events of 24th February 2022 meant a new chapter for our organisation. Already when STEP-IN worked primarily in Iraq, Ukrainians were forming a large part of our team. Doctors, coordinators, accountants, most of our former colleagues got affected in one way or another when the full-scale war in Ukraine started. As a Slovak NGO, based in the neighbouring country, it was natural for us to mobilise all our resources to respond to this new situation. Nowadays STEP-In runs mobile clinics in east part of the country, providing specialist training for local medical professionals and addresses pressing mental health needs. We also continue our work in Iraq where we are providing services to those, who have multiple vulnerabilities, especially displaced children with disabilities. Meanwhile in Syria, we cooperate with our local partner in Aleppo in the provision of healthcare to those most affected by the protracted crises of the recent years. Last, but not least, in 2021 STEP-IN embarked on yet another adventure with the publication of the book ‘2014: The Year I Died’. In it, we bring you unique testimonies of people from Iraq, which together create a complex picture of what happens when extremism reigns free. You can buy it here: https://www.yearidied.org/

Humanitarian healthcare is rarely what people picture. 🌍

It's not just trauma and emergencies. It's making sure a person with high blood pressure never misses their treatment 💊, or that someone managing diabetes, chronic pain, or limited mobility isn't left without care 🩺. It's helping people navigate a health system broken by war 🧭 through mental health support, referrals, rehabilitation, follow up.

Care that doesn't stop when the headlines do. At STEP IN, we see it every day.

Staying healthy in crisis isn't only about surviving today. It's about having what's needed to get through tomorrow. 🤝🧡

⛑️ Skills save lives.

And they need to be practised. 🫁 Since 2022, STEP IN has trained hundreds of healthcare professionals, rescuers and volunteers across Ukraine in emergency care 🩸, first aid, ultrasound diagnostics 🩺 and psychological first aid 🌿.

🚑 Because when seconds matter, confidence comes from preparation not luck. ❗Every training is an investment in safer, faster and better care for patients. 🧡

🌍 World Humanitarian Day

Behind every consultation 🧑🏼‍⚕️ 🛋️, every training ⛑️, every physiotherapy session 🦵🏼, and every laboratory test 🧪, there is a person who chose to show up.

At STEP IN, that means doctors, nurses, mental health specialists, physiotherapists, laboratory technicians, pharmacists, drivers, logisticians, MEAL staff, field coordinators and support teams who work every day to make healthcare accessible for people affected by crisis. Whether in Ukraine, Iraq or wherever the needs are greatest, they bring not only their expertise, but also compassion, resilience and hope. 🧡

Today, on World Humanitarian Day, we want to thank to every member of the STEP IN team, and to humanitarian workers around the world, for choosing to care - even when it isn't easy. 🙏🏼

Stories like Maria's remind us why access to healthcare remains so critical for people living near the frontline.

Our Mobile Medical Team is continuously providing primary healthcare 🩺, medicines 💊, and mental health support 🛋️ to communities in Kharkiv Oblast, reaching people whose lives continue to be shaped by the daily realities of war.

We're grateful to Most Solidarności and the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs for their partnership and support in making this work possible.

Together, we continue bringing healthcare closer to those who need it most. 🤝🏼💙💛

🕯️ Today, we remember.

On 3 August 2014, the Yazidi community in Sinjar, Iraq, became the target of a brutal genocide. Thousands of people were killed, women and girls were abducted and enslaved, families were torn apart, and entire communities were displaced. More than a decade later, many survivors are still searching for loved ones, rebuilding their lives, and seeking justice.

At STEP IN, we have had the privilege of working alongside the Yazidi community in Iraq. Through our book, 📖 2014: The Year I Died, we sought to preserve the voices of survivors - because remembrance begins with listening, and every story deserves to be heard.

Today, we honour the memory of those who lost their lives, stand with those who continue to rebuild theirs, and reaffirm our commitment to supporting communities on their path to healing, dignity, and hope. 🕊️

In remembrance. In solidarity. In hope. 🤍

👉🏼 Halfway through the project - and already so much has been achieved ⭐

This project has two goals: providing healthcare today, and strengthening healthcare for tomorrow. 🗓️

Across the Kharkiv and Dnipropetrovsk regions 🇺🇦 our Mobile Medical Teams 🚐 continue bringing healthcare closer to people through medical consultations, nursing services, laboratory diagnostics and mental health support. 🩺💉🧪🌿

🎓 At the same time, we're sharing knowledge. Through Pre-Hospital Polytrauma and Ultrasonography (USG) trainings 🫁 we're equipping healthcare professionals with new skills - because better prepared medical staff means better care for patients.

Together, we've already achieved:
📊 2 650 medical consultations
💉 365 nursing services
🧪 4 225 laboratory tests
🌿 133 mental health consultations
🎓 8 Pre-hospital polytrauma + USG trainings with 132 participants

This work of our Mobile Medical Teams and Training team are activities within the project “PROMISE: Child Protection, Emergency and Health for the most vulnerable families affected by the conflict in Kharkiv and Dnipropetrovsk Oblasts” funded by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MAECI) through the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS), in cooperation with Terre des Hommes.
