Is your physiotherapist treating arthrofibrosis the right way? 🔍

Physiotherapy after surgery is not one-size-fits-all. How it is delivered appears to affect the risk of fibrosis returning, and the right approach can make a real difference to recovery.

If you are planning surgery, or already recovering, these are questions worth asking your physiotherapist. A physio who understands fibrosis pathology will:
✔️ Prioritise reducing inflammation and healthy healing over building muscle
✔️ Adapt the plan in response to how your joint reacts
✔️ Never force range of motion or tell you to push through pain
✔️ Never blame the patient
✔️ Protect the joint in the early post-op period
✔️ Work alongside rheumatologists and pain specialists when needed

Swipe through for the full checklist, then use the complete version on our website to help build our international database of arthrofibrosis-aware physiotherapists.

🎥 NEW INTERVIEW: Manipulation Under Anaesthesia (MUA) — What patients and clinicians need to know

In our latest interview, IAA founder Kayley Usher sits down with Dr. Ralph Rosenberger, an orthopaedic surgeon in Austria specialising in arthrofibrosis and revision knee surgery, to discuss the risks and realities of MUA.

What is covered:
▪️ What happens during an MUA
▪️ Why the tearing of tissue is indiscriminate
▪️ The increased danger after total knee replacement
▪️ Why repeated manipulations are not recommended
▪️ How manipulation can trigger more inflammation and stiffness
▪️ The gentler surgical alternative: arthroscopic lysis of adhesions

👉 Watch the full interview or read the blog: https://www.arthrofibrosis.info/post/manipulation-under-anaesthesia-for-knee-arthrofibrosis

The video has subtitles auf Deutsch, in the Nederlands, etc.

Arthrofibrosis is a controversial subject and the views expressed by the clinicians do not necessarily represent the views of the IAA. Please consult your doctor.

Manipulation Under Anaesthesia, commonly known as MUA, is often the first intervention recommended to patients with a stiff knee after surgery. But what does this procedure actually involve, and what are the risks? In our latest interview, IAA founder Kayley Usher sits down with Dr. Ralph Rosenberge...

➡️Semaglutide – the Surprising New Anti-Fibrosis Drug

Disclaimer: The information provided in this blog in not intended to be medical advice. Always consult your doctor before taking a new medication.

You’ve probably heard about the wonder drugs, Ozempic and Wegovy, which are taken by millions of people worldwide to treat diabetes and obesity. The health benefits of semaglutide - the drug in these medications - are well established for people with diabetes or obesity, with numerous clinical trials demonstrating that it’s safe and highly effective. But the news keeps getting better, with recent clinical trials in patients with a wide range of chronic (long-term) conditions suggesting significant treatment benefits even when they are normal weight and not diabetic. Now, semaglutide looks set to transform almost every area of medicine. These surprising benefits appear to be due to the potent anti-inflammatory and anti-fibrotic effects of semaglutide [1] on the whole body, with systemic reductions in oxidative stress and inflammatory cytokines [2] (the signalling molecules the body makes). And a growing body of evidence indicates that many of semaglutide’s anti-inflammatory and anti-fibrosis actions are independent of blood sugar improvements and weight-loss [1,3], expanding the potential to help non-obese people who have a chronic condition.
