Four years ago about this time, I said arrivederci to Sardinia.
What I posted then was gratitude: the turquoise sea, the ancient rock, the passionate and sometimes grumpy Sards, that full-body yes I couldn’t explain.
All of it true. And all of it the surface.
What I couldn’t fully name at the time is that Sardinia is where I lost my footing. Where the ground I’d been standing on gave way, and I had to find out what — if anything — would hold me.
And then, something did.
That’s why there are two chapters, not one, in She Travels:
Losing Ground in Sardinia.
Finding Wholeness in Cala Jami.
First the losing. Then the finding. A slow return to my true self, on the same land that had undone me.
It’s not about the island. It’s about who you become when the ground moves.
