Every journey begins with someone who believes that something better is possible.

For iSD Health Solutions, that someone is our very own founder, Mr. Gregory Arneaud. Today, as we celebrate his birthday, we honour the dream that brought this company to life and the determination that has carried it forward. Gregory believes that better sleep could change lives, and he has devoted himself to helping people experience that possibility.

This year, that journey has taken us into a new chapter. Under Gregory’s leadership, we have introduced new systems, expanded our operations and improved the way we care for our patients. Behind those changes are people: a patient finding answers, a family finding reassurance, a team member gaining the confidence to do more. Those moments give our progress meaning. They remind us why this work matters.

A dream takes endurance. It asks you to stay patient when progress comes slowly, to make difficult decisions and to keep showing up when the road ahead is uncertain. Gregory, we see the commitment you bring to that responsibility. We appreciate your willingness to grow alongside us and your belief in what we can accomplish together. You have given this team a purpose we are proud to carry forward.

So today, from our teams in Trinidad and Tobago and Jamaica, together with our expanding network of providers, affiliates and partners, happy birthday, Gregory! May you find joy in the distance you have travelled, pride in the people who have grown with you and fresh hope for everything still to come. We wish you good health, laughter, time with the people you love and the opportunity to enjoy the life you have worked so hard to build. We are grateful to share this journey with you.

What Does AHI Actually Mean?

Some of you may have heard our care coordinators mention AHI with our sleep tests. Here's what it means.

AHI simply measures how many times your breathing pauses completely (apneas) or becomes dangerously shallow (hypopneas) for at least 10 seconds, averaged across each hour of sleep.

According to established clinical criteria, an AHI under 5 is considered normal, 5 to 14 indicates mild sleep apnea, 15 to 29 signals moderate sleep apnea, and 30 or more falls into the severe category.

While AHI helps clinicians classify the frequency of breathing disturbances, it should never be interpreted in isolation. A single metric cannot capture your complete health profile. Key indicators like oxygen desaturation levels, sleep fragmentation, daytime symptom burden, body position, total sleep time, and underlying cardiovascular risk all heavily influence what your result actually means for your daily life.

Treating the patient, and not just the number, is essential for long-term health, as untreated sleep apnea is directly linked to an increased risk of hypertension, stroke, and chronic fatigue.

Understanding your diagnostic results is the first step toward restoring your health and vitality. Have a sleep report you don’t fully understand or will like to get tested? iSD Health Solutions simplifies the process through comprehensive screening, consultation, testing, US Board Certified physician interpretation, and personalized treatment guidance.

How many hours of sleep do you actually need?

Sleep needs change significantly as we grow! From newborns who need up to 17 hours of daily rest to nourish brain development, down to adults who thrive on 7–9 hours, prioritizing quality sleep is one of the best investments you can make for your health.

According to guidelines from the CDC and the National Sleep Foundation, healthy sleep duration varies widely by age:

For Newborns (0–3 Months), sleep fuels rapid physical growth, brain development, and the formation of critical neural connections.

For Infants (4–11 Months), sleep consolidates motor learning, sensory processing, and emotional bonding as circadian rhythms stabilize.

For Children (1–5 Years), sleep supports language acquisition, immune function, and the brain remodeling needed for emotional regulation.

For Teens (14–17 Years), sleep drives intense hormonal changes, athletic recovery, and critical brain maturation in areas governing decision-making.

For Adults (18+ Years), sleep focuses on cellular repair, clearing brain waste, and lowering the risk of chronic cardiovascular and metabolic diseases.

Prioritizing sleep improves cognitive function, mood stability, and overall physical health at every stage of life. Share this guide with someone who needs a reminder to rest!

Falling asleep at a red light isn't just 'being tired'. Fighting to keep your eyes open on the highway, during an early-morning commute or after night shift can become a public-safety problem.

Meta-analytic evidence shows that obstructive sleep apnea is associated with substantially increased motor-vehicle crash risk. People often underestimate how impaired they are when sleep-deprived, and subjective sleepiness alone does not always reliably identify who is at greatest risk.

If you're nodding off while driving, stop and rest, do not try to 'push through'. If recurrent daytime sleepiness, loud snoring or breathing pauses are part of the picture, seek evaluation at iSD Health Solutions.

Your Oxygen Level Tells a Story

You can be in bed for eight hours and still put your body under stress all night. One reason is repeated drops in blood oxygen caused by sleep-disordered breathing.

Overnight pulse oximetry tracks SpO2 which is the percentage of haemoglobin carrying oxygen and heart rate. Patterns of repeated oxygen desaturation can help identify patients who need further investigation.

Oximetry is primarily a screening tool. It does not measure every aspect of sleep and cannot replace a comprehensive diagnostic study like our Home Sleep Apnea Test or Polysomnography Test when more information is required.

Ask our care coordinators which test is appropriate for you, or start here with our assessment: isdhealthsolutions.com/assessment.

What Actually Happens During Sleep Apnoea?

Sleep apnoea isn't simply 'snoring badly'. In obstructive sleep apnoea, your upper airway repeatedly narrows or closes while you sleep, even though your body is still trying to breathe.

Each obstruction can reduce or interrupt airflow, cause oxygen levels to fall and trigger brief arousals that reopen the airway. This cycle may repeat many times an hour. The result is a combination of intermittent hypoxia, fragmented sleep and repeated activation of the body's stress-response systems - which helps explain why untreated OSA can affect far more than how sleepy you feel in the morning.

If someone has told you that you stop breathing, gasp or choke in your sleep, that warrants investigation. Visit isdhealthsolutions.com to take the sleep assessment or arrange a consultation. iSD provides testing and treatment pathways throughout the Caribbean.

Snoring Is a Sound. The Cause Matters.

"He always snored so." "She could shake the whole house."

Across Caribbean families, loud snoring is often treated as comedy, a family trait or something a partner simply has to tolerate. Sometimes it is harmless but sometimes it is the audible warning sign of an obstructed airway.

Snoring occurs when airflow causes tissues in the upper airway to vibrate. It can occur without obstructive sleep apnoea, but habitual loud snoring especially with pauses in breathing, choking, gasping, morning headaches or daytime sleepiness deserves assessment.

Snoring by itself cannot tell you whether Obstructive Sleep Apnea OSA is present; diagnosis requires appropriate clinical evaluation and, when indicated, objective sleep testing.

Don't diagnose sleep apnoea by sound and don't dismiss the sound either. Start with iSD's FREE 2-minute sleep assessment isdhealthsolutions.com/assessment. Complete the assessment and book your consultation via WhatsApp.

Sleep Is Not Downtime

While you sleep, your body is doing some of its most important work. Sleep is not an empty space between one busy Caribbean day and the next - it is an active biological state affecting your brain, hormones, metabolism, immune system, cardiovascular system and emotional regulation.

Normal sleep cycles repeatedly through non-REM and REM stages. Deep non-REM sleep is associated with restorative physiological processes, while REM sleep has important roles in cognition, emotional processing and memory. Regularly cutting sleep short means repeatedly interrupting processes your body expects to complete every night.

This SLEEPTEMBER, start looking at sleep as a vital sign. If tired mornings, poor concentration, snoring or restless sleep have become your 'normal', take iSD's sleep assessment at isdhealthsolutions.com/assessment.

iSD serves Trinidad & Tobago, Jamaica, Barbados and the wider English speaking Caribbean. Call us at 65-SNORE or WhatsApp Message us at 255-2165.
