AHF Jamaica

AHF Jamaica We promote free access to HIV testing, STI diagnosis and treatment, providing information and comprehensive care for those who need it most.

In late October 2013, AHF signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Jamaican Ministry of Health that officially enabled the nonprofit to provide care to Jamaicans living with HIV as the country’s national HIV partner. AHF Jamaica’s work began soon after in the island’s Western Region, where AHF Jamaica partnered in providing care for 1,518 people from Montego Bay’s Cornwall Regional Hospital,

1,313 people from the MoBay Type 5 Clinic, and 994 clients at the Savanna-La-Mar Hospital in Savanna-La Mar, which is the chief town in the island’s capital of Westmoreland Parish. AHF Jamaica is also partnering with a well-respected NGO in Jamaica to provide care for HIV+ patients in the NGO’s facilities in Kingston, Montego Bay and Ocho Rios.

The global debt crisis is holding back progress.
3.4 billion people live in countries that spend more on debt than on health or education. Developing nations pay interest rates up to 1000% higher than wealthy nations. And every year, $3 trillion flows from the Global South to the North through debt payments, high interest, and tax evasion.
Debt injustice is a human rights issue.
The chance for sustainable growth worldwide depends on a fairer system.

🩸 Why is managing your period with dignity becoming more of a luxury?
More than 70 million people live in extreme poverty across Latin America and the Caribbean, surviving on income equivalent to just over US$2 a day. When money barely stretches for food or transportation, buying menstrual products can become simply impossible.
And the impact goes far beyond money: up to 30% of girls and adolescents in the region have missed school during their period due to lack of menstrual products, safe water or decent bathrooms. In Jamaica, UNICEF reports that 1 in 4 girls misses school every month because of her period.
Reducing barriers makes a difference. Jamaica🇯🇲, Mexico 🇲🇽, Colombia 🇨🇴 and Brazil 🇧🇷 removed taxes on menstrual products.
Periods should not become another form of inequality.

During COVID, access to vaccines was not equal for everyone.
Some countries secured doses from the start, while others had to wait.
That difference had real consequences: more than 1 million deaths in 2021 could have been prevented with more equitable access.
Latin America and the Caribbean jointly accounted over 25% of the total worldwide COVID-19 deaths (1.8 million people combined as of early 2025).
Today, rules for the next pandemic are being negotiated.
The system works like this: countries share information about viruses, which allows vaccines and treatments to be developed.
But there is not always an obligation to share those benefits.
That is the problem.
If clear rules are not established, access will again depend on who can pay more and who cannot.
The next pandemic cannot have a VIP lane.
EU: Stop blocking health equity.

Let’s talk about something most people overlook… the window period.

You can get tested and still show a negative result, even if an infection is there. That’s because your body may not have produced enough markers yet for the test to detect it.

So what does that mean for you?

It means timing matters.
It means follow-up testing matters.
And it definitely means protecting yourself and your partner still matters.

Don’t guess. Know your status.
