📚 New Book Release – “Introduction to Happiness Studies”
by Happiness Studies Researcher Kosuke Okumura
I’m excited to announce the publication of my new book, Introduction to Happiness Studies — now available in both Japanese and English!
This book is a heartfelt and accessible guide to the field of happiness studies, combining global research with my own experiences as a Japanese researcher and practitioner. It was written with the sincere hope of helping readers not only understand happiness from a scientific perspective, but also feel it in their daily lives.
In Japan, books that explore Western happiness science in a practical and research-based way are still rare. That’s why I felt a strong responsibility to write this book — to bridge cultures and bring global happiness studies into a Japanese context.
I still believe I have much more to learn and improve as a writer and scholar. But I also believe this is a meaningful first step. If you’re interested in well-being, positive psychology, or simply living a more fulfilling life — I warmly invite you to read it.

🌿 Rediscover Peace in the Heart of Nature at Oirase Gorge, Aomori 🏞️
Today, I found myself walking along Oirase Gorge, one of Japan’s most beautiful natural landscapes. Located in Aomori Prefecture, this stunning gorge is a sanctuary of crystal-clear streams, majestic waterfalls, and peaceful trails.

✨ Why Oirase Gorge is a must-visit:

Tranquil Walking Trails: The 14-kilometer trail follows the Oirase Stream, weaving through dense forests and alongside moss-covered rocks. The sound of flowing water accompanied every step, creating an atmosphere of calm.
Waterfall Wonders: I stopped to admire Choshi Otaki, the largest waterfall along the gorge, and smaller cascading falls that added a magical touch to the journey.
Seasonal Magic: Whether it’s the lush greens of summer or the fiery hues of autumn, Oirase Gorge transforms with the seasons, offering a unique experience every time you visit.
🌸 Reflection: Oirase Gorge reminded me of the Japanese concept of ma, the space between moments. Walking through the forest and listening to the stream allowed me to embrace those moments of stillness and find happiness in the simplicity of nature.

🏯 Experience Timeless Beauty at Kyoto’s Golden Pavilion (Kinkaku-ji) 🌸
Today, I visited Kinkaku-ji, also known as the Golden Pavilion, one of Japan’s most iconic and breathtaking temples. Nestled in Kyoto, this UNESCO World Heritage site is a place where history, art, and nature converge to create a sense of serenity and awe.

✨ Why Kinkaku-ji is unforgettable:

The Golden Pavilion: The temple is covered in radiant gold leaf, standing majestically above the reflective Kyoko-chi pond. The symmetry of the temple and its reflection feels almost surreal, like stepping into a dream.
A Journey Through the Seasons: Kinkaku-ji transforms with the seasons—soft cherry blossoms frame it in spring, lush greenery surrounds it in summer, fiery red maples enhance it in autumn, and a dusting of snow creates a magical scene in winter.
Mindful Walks in the Gardens: I took my time exploring the carefully curated paths and gardens, each step bringing a new perspective. The sound of rustling leaves and the gentle ripples on the pond made it a meditative experience.
🌿 Reflection: Kinkaku-ji reminded me of the importance of reflection—literally and figuratively. Just like the temple’s reflection in the pond, our inner calm is a mirror of the peace we cultivate in our surroundings.
