THE ART OF LETTING GO IN ADDICTION RECOVERY.

For countless people in recovery from alcohol or drug addiction, the past only serves as a painful reminder of the trials and tribulations they’ve been through. The past can stand as a mirror, projecting back at us an image we don’t like seeing.

This is what makes letting go of the past paramount to developing a brighter future. We look at how the past can haunt a person, lulling them into a false sense of security that shackles them before they arrive at the emotional milestones needed for newfound sobriety.

While the use of drugs provides that pleasure on the surface level, that rush is fleeting. The use of drugs can stem from an inability to cope with obstacles and problems. This more than likely is due to the fact there was a lack of development in the tools and strategies that are needed to deal with those issues in a constructive or healthy manner.

Pleasure is a temporary and somewhat static state and the pleasure derived from the use of drugs is equally temporary and static. Once those pleasurable feelings are gone reality throws its weight and the cycle of using becomes more chronic in nature.

In recovery, there is a theme of letting go—letting go of old playmates, playthings and surroundings, whether physical or metaphoric in nature. Superficial ways in coping with life and its myriad of hindrances are replaced with healthier and more substantial ways of coping.

Without the blinders on and old crutches to fall on, we realize we need to live life on life’s terms. We need to let go of the baggage of the past because hanging on to the past will ultimately consume us and we will backslide into those old behaviors and make us feel useless and vulnerable.

GUILT AND SHAME IN ADDICTION RECOVERY.

Guilt and shame in recovery are common feelings for many people as they examine the impact their addiction has had on themselves and those around them. As you rebuild and repair relationships and your life, you should know that it can be very helpful to your recovery to know how to navigate these emotions.

Guilt and shame often linger as unwelcome companions in the journey of recovery. Discover how to cultivate self-compassion, challenge negative self-talk, and embrace a growth mindset to pave the way for lasting recovery and renewed self-worth.

People may feel guilt and shame during the addiction recovery treatment process as they start to develop an increased awareness of the ways that their substance or alcohol use disorder, and associated compulsive or negative behaviors, have impacted their lives and the lives of those around them.

All negative feelings are tough. But some emotions can feel more insidious than others. Guilt and shame can snake their way into our thoughts. They can influence how we feel, think, act and perceive life.

They can even, unfortunately, hold us back from accessing help. There is no denying that guilt and shame are very complex feelings that often have very strong psychological roots. But despite this, we sometimes need to learn how to shake off these feelings – or at least to grow with them.

Regardless of your situation, you do not deserve to feel guilt or shame for your addiction. But at The Good Shepherd Treatment and Rehabilitation Centre - Kibwezi , we understand that these feelings can be very hard to break free from. We hope by exploring the mechanisms of these emotions, we can provide an insight into how they function. This can help us gain power over these feelings and implement practical strategies to tackle them head-on.

SELFCARE IN ADDICTION RECOVERY.

Self-care is not a luxury but a necessity for healing. It involves actively tending to physical, emotional, and social needs, which fosters overall well-being.

Have you ever wondered why self-care is often highlighted in discussions about addiction recovery? Addiction isn’t merely a series of poor choices; it’s a multifaceted condition that touches every aspect of life—physical, emotional, and social.

True recovery is not just about abstinence but about rebuilding a healthier, more balanced life. Self-care serves as a cornerstone in this journey, offering stability, resilience, and tools for sustainable sobriety.

SOME PRACTICAL ROUTINES..

1.Start the day with a nutritious breakfast and a mindfulness practice.
2.Dedicate time to physical activity, like walking or yoga.
3.Attend weekly support groups to share experiences and learn from others.
4.Set aside time for hobbies, such as painting or gardening.
5.Create a consistent bedtime routine for better sleep hygiene.

Self-care is the foundation for long-term recovery. It nurtures the body, mind, and spirit, enabling individuals to rebuild lives filled with purpose, joy, and connection. By prioritizing self-care, recovery becomes not just a possibility but a path to a brighter, healthier future.

EXODUS 14 :13-14.

Exodus 14:13–14 But Moses said to the people, “Fear not! Stand firm! And see the salvation of the LORD, which He will show you today. For the Egyptians whom you have seen today, you shall never see again. 14 The Lord shall fight for you, while you hold your peace.”

WHAT STORIES IN THE BIBLE ARE ABOUT GOD FIGHTING BATTLES?

Much of the Old Testament chronicles how God fought for His chosen people, the Israelites. Many familiar Bible characters faced battles that were impossible until God stepped in to fight for them: David and Goliath (1 Samuel 17), Daniel in the Lion’s Den – the mouths of the lions were shut (Daniel 6), Queen Esther (Esther 4–7), Moses and the Egyptians (Exodus 1–14), and Joshua and the Walls of Jericho (Joshua 6).

I have found peace in knowing that God is fighting my battles, and I will share some scriptures

you can declare over your life to see victory, also! We all face battles where victory seems

impossible in our own strength, and that’s the key—when we can’t win, God shows up and gets

the glory! When we partner with God to do His will, He promises to show up and fight for us.

GOD FIGHTS FOR US WHEN WE CANNOT.

💬🧡 Every Conversation Matters – Check In, Connect, Protect

Every conversation matters. A simple check-in with your child about their day, friends, interests, and concerns can strengthen trust and create a supportive environment where they feel safe seeking guidance. 🏠🗣️

You don't need to have all the answers – just be present, listen, and show you care. Those small moments build big bridges.

Ask open-ended questions like:
✅ "What was the best part of your day?"
✅ "Who did you spend time with today?"
✅ "Is there anything on your mind that you'd like to talk about?"

When children know they can talk to you without fear or judgment, they are more likely to share their struggles – and less likely to turn to harmful substances. 💙🧡

Start the conversation today. It could change everything.
