KISLHC 2026 | Momentum Builds as We Progress into Day 2

The Kenya International Scientific Lung Health Conference (KISLHC) 2026 is well underway, bringing together clinicians, researchers, scientists, policymakers, public health professionals, development partners, industry leaders, and patient advocates to advance the future of lung health.

Day 1 laid a strong foundation with five highly interactive pre-conference workshops, where participants strengthened practical skills and shared experiences in:

🔹 Getting Spirometry Right: Quality, Technique and Interpretation

🔹 Pleural and Advanced Bronchoscopy

🔹 Are We on Track to END TB? Innovations in Screening and Diagnosis

🔹 Diagnosing the Invisible: Advancing Laboratory Capacity for Lung Health

The day concluded with an inspiring Opening Ceremony, featuring remarks from the Ministry of Health, the voice of a patient, a thought-provoking scientific keynote, and the official opening of the conference—setting the stage for meaningful dialogue and collaboration under this year's theme:

"From Detection to Recovery: Integrated Pathways and Patient-Centered Innovations for Lung Health."

Today, Day 2 continues with a rich scientific program exploring how research, innovation, and multidisciplinary collaboration can improve respiratory health across the lifespan.

Delegates have begun the day with Plenary 2: Invisible Exposures Across the Lifespan, examining the effects of climate change, environmental exposures, air quality, va**ng, and social determinants on asthma, COPD, and other respiratory diseases.

The programme also features:

📌 E-Poster Session 1, showcasing cutting-edge research from investigators across diverse areas of lung health.

📌 Symposium 1, with parallel tracks on:

• Community & Primary Health Care

• Telemedicine & Digital Health

• Integration of Lung Health with Other Diseases

Later today, delegates will participate in Plenary 3: Growing Lungs, Lifelong Impact, focusing on early-life determinants of lung disease, paediatric respiratory health, sleep medicine, and chronic respiratory failure.

Concluding the Pleural & Advanced Bronchoscopy Workshop 2026

Over the past three days, the Pleural & Advanced Bronchoscopy Workshop 2026 has provided an exceptional platform for advancing knowledge, refining procedural skills, and fostering multidisciplinary collaboration in respiratory medicine.

The workshop combined evidence-based lectures, live clinical demonstrations, and intensive hands-on simulation, equipping participants with practical competencies in the diagnosis and management of complex pleural and airway diseases.

Sessions explored a wide range of topics, including:

🔹 Parapneumonic effusions and empyema
🔹 Intrapleural fibrinolytic therapy (MIST-2)
🔹 Pneumothorax and persistent air leaks
🔹 Malignant pleural effusions
🔹 Pleurodesis and Indwelling Pleural Catheters (IPC)
🔹 VATS
🔹 Airway anatomy
🔹 Endobronchial Ultrasound (EBUS)
🔹 Principles and advances in interventional bronchoscopy

Participants also observed live clinical cases, demonstrating real-world application of these techniques, including:

• Medical thoracoscopy with pleurodesis
• Bronchoscopic evaluation of upper and lower lobe lung masses
• Bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL)
• Ultrasound-guided transthoracic lung biopsy
• Diagnostic and therapeutic bronchoscopy for complex respiratory conditions

Hands-on practical sessions enabled participants to develop procedural confidence through supervised simulation in:

✅ Thoracic ultrasound (TUS)
✅ Ultrasound-guided pleural biopsy using the Abrams needle
✅ Pigtail catheter insertion
✅ Seldinger-guided chest drain insertion with underwater seal drainage
✅ Indwelling Pleural Catheter (IPC) insertion
✅ Balloon airway dilatation using CRE balloons

The workshop reaffirmed the value of simulation-based education, mentorship, and multidisciplinary collaboration in strengthening capacity for advanced respiratory care and improving patient outcomes.

Day 1 Complete | Pleural & Advanced Bronchoscopy Workshop 2026.

An inspiring start to the Pleural & Advanced Bronchoscopy Workshop 2026 at Coast General Teaching and Referral Hospital (CGTRH)

Today brought together respiratory physicians, pulmonologists, trainees, and multidisciplinary healthcare professionals for a day of evidence-based learning, practical skills development, and meaningful collaboration.

The program covered:

🔹 Evidence-based management of parapneumonic effusions and empyema

🔹 Fibrinolytic therapy who, when, and how to apply MIST-2 protocols

🔹 Management of pneumothorax and persistent air leaks

The afternoon featured hands-on skills stations where participants gained practical experience in:

✅ Thoracic Ultrasound (TUS)

✅ Ultrasound-guided pleural biopsy

✅ Seldinger-guided chest drain insertion

✅ Indwelling Pleural Catheter (IPC) placement

The day concluded with engaging case discussions, troubleshooting sessions, and an interactive Q&A that reinforced key clinical concepts.

Today, we concluded our two-day Integrated Lung Health Training for Healthcare Workers, and what an impactful journey it has been.

Over the course of the training, healthcare workers came together to strengthen their knowledge, share experiences, and build practical skills that will enhance the delivery of TB and lung health services in their communities.

Through interactive sessions and expert-led discussions, participants explored critical areas including:

✅ TB Epidemiology
✅ Active Case Finding
✅ TB in Children
✅ TB Diagnosis and Treatment
✅ Drug-Resistant TB (DR-TB)
✅ Pharmacovigilance
✅ TB Infection Prevention and Control
✅ TB in Congregate Settings
✅ Monitoring & Evaluation (M&E)

This training was more than just a learning opportunity. It was a platform for reflection, collaboration, and renewed commitment to improving patient care and advancing efforts to end TB.

Every day, healthcare workers are at the forefront of the fight against TB detecting cases, supporting patients through treatment, preventing transmission, and promoting healthier communities. Strengthening their capacity is key to strengthening our health systems.

As we conclude this training, the impact continues:

✔ Improved knowledge and skills in TB prevention, diagnosis, and treatment
✔ Enhanced capacity to identify and manage TB cases effectively

Asthma is a chronic lung condition that affects how air moves in and out of the lungs. It causes inflammation and narrowing of the airways, leading to symptoms such as wheezing, persistent coughing, chest tightness, and shortness of breath.

For many individuals and families, asthma is more than just a diagnosis it often means missed school days, disrupted work, sleepless nights, and moments of fear when breathing becomes difficult.

At Respiratory Society of Kenya, we are committed to improving lung health and supporting those affected by asthma. Our work goes beyond raising awareness; we focus on community education, promoting early diagnosis, advocating for cleaner air, and improving access to treatment and care. We collaborate with healthcare providers, policymakers, and communities to ensure that everyone has a fair chance at healthy breathing.

Despite the challenges, asthma can be effectively managed. With the right information, treatment, and consistent care, people living with asthma can lead full, active, and productive lives. However, this requires continued efforts to strengthen health systems, increase awareness, and address environmental factors that contribute to poor respiratory health.

Asthma is often triggered by factors in our environment and daily lives, including dust, air pollution, smoke, cold weather, respiratory infections, and allergens such as pollen and mold. While not all cases can be prevented, many asthma attacks can be avoided by understanding and reducing exposure to these triggers.

Simple actions such as keeping living spaces clean and well-ventilated, avoiding smoke and polluted environments, using prescribed medication correctly, and attending regular medical check-ups can make a significant difference.

As we mark World Asthma Day, we call upon communities, healthcare providers, and policymakers to prioritize lung health and work together to reduce the burden of asthma. No one should feel alone in their struggle to breathe, and every individual deserves access to the care and support they need.
