MARRIAGE SERIES: NO PLACE FOR PRIDE

Proverbs 16:18 (NKJV): “Pride goes before destruction, And a haughty spirit before a fall.”

Pride is one of the primary destroyers of intimacy in marriage. It stands in the way of honest communication and amplifies what should be minor issues.

You should never be too proud to do your part in marriage, in spite of your partner’s weaknesses. Yes, they might have a problem in a certain area of their character, but the question should always be: have you done your part?

Pride keeps records of wrongs, rehearses offences, and waits for the other person to make the first move. But love is not built that way. A strong marriage is sustained by two people who are willing to die to self, yield to the Spirit, and esteem one another above personal pride.

Humility does not mean that you ignore issues. Rather, humility gives you the right spirit with which to address those issues. It allows you to speak the truth in love, listen without defensiveness, apologise where necessary, and forgive quickly.

Pride hardens hearts, but humility opens doors for healing. Pride separates couples, but humility restores. When you choose humility, you make room for God to work in your marriage. Hallelujah!

FURTHER STUDY: Ephesians 4:2-3; Philippians

PRAYER: Loving Father, I thank You for the gift of marriage. I ask that You search my heart and remove every seed of pride, stubbornness, selfishness, and offence. Teach me to walk in humility, patience, forgiveness, and love. Give me the grace to do my part, even when it is difficult, and to value peace and unity in my home. By Your Spirit, I choose to be quick to forgive, willing to listen, and ready to serve. My marriage is strengthened by wisdom, humility, and the love of Christ. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Marriage won’t heal your insecurities, erase loneliness, or make you feel whole. If you aren’t happy single, marriage won’t fix that.

# # The Hidden Wounds: 17 Things Men Do Without Knowing Is Abuse to Their Wife

Most men are not monsters. They do not wake up planning to hurt their wives. They love their families. They work hard. They believe they are good husbands.

But good husbands can still be abusive—without ever raising a hand.

Abuse is not just physical. It is anything that controls, demeans, isolates, or terrorizes. And many men do these things daily, thinking they are just being "strong," "honest," or "in charge."

Here is what you may be doing without realizing it wounds your wife to her core.

---

# # # 1. The Silent Treatment

She upsets you, so you stop talking to her. Hours. Days. You freeze her out. You believe you are "cooling off" or "teaching her a lesson." She experiences it as emotional abandonment. Silence, when used as punishment, is emotional abuse.

**Why he doesn't see it:** He thinks, "I'm not yelling. I'm not hitting. I'm just quiet." But silence as punishment is control. It says, "You do not exist to me until you obey."

**What it does to her:** She feels invisible, desperate, and terrified. She will do anything to end the silence—even apologize for things she did not do.

---

# # # 2. Financial Control

You earn the money, so you control it. You give her an allowance. You question every purchase. You make her beg for necessities. You hide accounts, investments, or debt. You believe you are being "responsible." She experiences it as imprisonment.

**Why he doesn't see it:** "I provide for her. She has everything she needs." But financial abuse is not about how much she has—it is about her access and autonomy. If she cannot buy basic things without permission, she is not a wife. She is a prisoner.

**What it does to her:** She loses dignity, independence, and the ability to leave if she needs to. She feels trapped.

---

# # # 3. Using Her Past Against Her

She told you her secrets—childhood wounds, past mistakes

Once you realize that anything can happen—sickness, death, or loss of a job—literally anything can change in the blink of an eye, you become very humble. Tables turn, and that's how crazy life can be. Always pray, stay humble, and be thankful.

MARRIAGE SERIES: DEALING WITH CONFLICT

Matthew 1:18-19 (NKJV): “Now the birth of Jesus Christ was as follows: After His mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Spirit. Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not wanting to make her a public example, was minded to put her away secretly.”

When Joseph learnt about Mary’s pregnancy, he made the decision to put her away secretly so that he would not shame her.

One can only imagine the pain, confusion and disappointment he must have felt. In his mind, the woman to whom he was betrothed appeared to have betrayed him. He must have struggled to believe Mary’s explanation that she had conceived by the Holy Spirit. Yet, in all this, Joseph behaved honourably.

There is a great lesson to learn from how Joseph treated this situation. He did not seek to disgrace his espoused in spite of what seemed to be a serious mistake on her part. The Bible calls him a just man, and this was revealed in how he handled her.

Today, we live in a generation where a spouse who feels wronged may quickly turn to social media, television or public platforms to reveal everything they consider evil or wicked about their partner.

But where is the justice, righteousness or wisdom in washing dirty linen in public? Yes, your partner may have issues of character and serious weaknesses, but is telling everyone willing to listen the best way to respond?

From Joseph, we learn that it is the mark of goodness when a person does not seek to expose the weakness of their spouse. It is wisdom to cover even when one has been hurt, to protect even where one has been offended, and to preserve dignity even in moments of disappointment. A righteous person knows that there are matters to be handled privately, prayerfully and with the fear of God.

THE ART OF SPEAKING TO YOUR WOMAN

1. Be consistent. Don't speak good to her only when you want pleasure or s*x

2. Words are powerful to a woman. Don't withhold your words of love saying "You are a man who loves through actions". Love her in words and deeds

3. Don't speak to her as if you are ordering her. Suggest, request, kindly ask; it makes her feel special and enjoy doing it for you

4. Be a man of details. Pay attention to the information she shares, show her you care

5. Find a special name to call her "Hun, Darling, Queen" a name that shows how special she is to you, not just the mother of your children

6. Don't shout at her. It scares her yet you are her protector

7. Don't talk to her as if you look down on her. If she doesn't know about a subject matter, lovingly teach her

8. Talk to her about her emotions, dreams, life, jokes; not just chores and responsibilities. She wants to connect with you

9. Talk to her as often as you can; don't deprive her of someone to talk to. She will feel rejected

10. Ask for her thoughts about the matter. Make her feel involved in your life
