🥗 78% of Market Vegetables Contain Pesticide Residues… Are We Eating Healthy or Just Filling Our Plates?
📊 Did you know?
🇰🇪 Life expectancy in Kenya is approximately 67 years, and non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as cancer, diabetes, heart disease and chronic respiratory illnesses account for a growing share of deaths.
🥬 A recent study reported that 78% of sampled market vegetables contained detectable pesticide residues. Detectable residues do not necessarily mean the food is unsafe, but some samples exceeded recommended safety limits, highlighting the importance of proper food handling and stronger food safety practices.
💭 The question is... are we doing enough to protect our families?
Every day we buy sukuma wiki, spinach, tomatoes, carrots, cabbage and fruits believing they are the healthiest foods on our table. While vegetables remain an essential part of a healthy diet, improper pesticide use can increase the risk of exposure if produce is not grown, handled and prepared safely.
The good news? Don't stop eating vegetables—eat them wisely.
✅ How to Reduce Pesticide Residues at Home
🥗 1. Wash under running water Rub vegetables gently with your hands while rinsing. This helps remove dirt and some pesticide residues.
🥣 2. Soak for 10–15 minutes A solution of clean water with a little baking soda can help reduce residues on many fruits and vegetables. Rinse thoroughly afterward.
🍃 3. Remove damaged outer leaves For cabbage, lettuce and similar vegetables, discard the outermost leaves before cooking or eating.
🍅 4. Peel when appropriate Peeling carrots, cucumbers and some fruits can reduce residues on the surface, though it may also remove some nutrients.
🔥 5. Cook thoroughly when suitable Cooking may reduce levels of some pesticide residues, although it is not effective for every chemical.
🛒 6. Buy from trusted sources Whenever possible, support farmers and suppliers who follow good agricultural practices.
🥬 7. Grow your own Even a small kitchen garden can provide fresh fruits and vegetables while giving you more control over how they are produced.
