With well-equipped facilities and dedicated healthcare professionals, the hospital is expanding access to essential and specialised health services while demonstrating the potential of faith-based healthcare in transforming lives.

As the facility works towards attaining Level 4 status and increasing uptake of the Social Health Authority (SHA) and community health insurance schemes, it highlights an important lesson: quality infrastructure must be matched with sustainable health financing and community utilisation to achieve lasting impact.

CHAK held its inaugural Medical Officer Internship Commissioning Ceremony at the CHAK Guest House & Conference Centre this week, marking a significant milestone in the journey of 118 Medical Officer Interns as they begin their internship across CHAK's eight accredited member hospitals.

Held under the theme "Called to Heal. Committed to Serve.", the ceremony brought together the CHAK General Secretary & CEO, Dr Barasa, Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council (KMPDC) CEO Dr David Kariuki, CHAK internship programme participating hospitals CEOs, Internship Coordinators, consultants, trainers, and other healthcare leaders. The Medical Officer Interns were encouraged to pursue excellence, serve with compassion, and uphold the highest standards of professionalism and integrity.

The commissioning featured symbolic moments including the Lighting of the Candle, the Medical Officer Intern Pledge, the Signing of the CHAK Service Covenant, and the Commissioning Prayer and Blessing, affirming the interns' commitment to compassionate, ethical, and Christ-centred service.

As they begin this important chapter, we wish all the medical officer interns God's guidance, wisdom and grace as they provide quality healthcare and transform lives across our communities.

University of Nairobi – Strengthening Connections with Future Medical Professionals

CHAK's ongoing outreach to sixth-year medical students reached the University of Nairobi, where approximately 80 aspiring doctors participated in a Medical Officer Internship Sensitisation Session designed to help them make informed decisions about their internship journey.

The event was graced by the Dean, School of Medicine, University of Nairobi, the CHAK Chief Executive Officer and General Secretary and Dr. Peter Rumunya, Head of Health Programmes at CHAK, who encouraged students to embrace internship as the foundation for professional growth and excellence in service.

Representatives from each of CHAK's eight internship hospitals showcased what makes their programmes unique—from specialist services and clinical rotations to mentorship, learning culture, and patient-centred care.

Students actively engaged in discussions on specialist services, on-call schedules, career progression, and internship expectations. The open dialogue also helped address common misconceptions about internship placements in mission hospitals while providing a clearer understanding of the rich clinical experience available within CHAK facilities.

As the sensitisation programme continues across Kenyan universities, CHAK remains committed to equipping future doctors with the knowledge and confidence they need to take the next step in their medical careers.

Kenyatta University - Continuing the Journey with Future Doctors

Our series of Medical Officer Internship sensitisation sessions continued at Kenyatta University, where CHAK engaged approximately 50 sixth-year medical students in meaningful conversations about internship opportunities within our network of faith-based hospitals.

The session was officially opened by the CHAK Chief Executive Officer together with a representative of the Dean, School of Medicine, who encouraged students to approach their internship journey with purpose, professionalism, and a commitment to lifelong learning.

Representatives from AGC Tenwek Hospital, PCEA Tumutumu Hospital, AIC Kijabe Hospital, PCEA Kikuyu Hospital, PCEA Chogoria Hospital, Consolata Hospital Nkubu, Maua Methodist Hospital, and AIC Litein Hospital shared practical insights into internship training, mentorship, and the diverse learning experiences available across CHAK member hospitals.

One of the highlights of the engagement was the interactive discussion that followed. Students asked thoughtful questions about career pathways beyond internship, opportunities for specialization, professional growth, and what distinguishes successful applicants to the CHAK Medical Officer Internship Programme.

Through these university engagements, CHAK continues to inform, inspire, and prepare the next generation of doctors for careers rooted in excellence, compassion, and service.

JKUAT – Expanding the Conversation on Medical Internships

As part of CHAK's ongoing nationwide sensitisation programme for sixth-year medical students, we were delighted to engage future doctors at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) on the opportunities available through the CHAK Medical Officer Internship Programme.

The session connected aspiring doctors with representatives from CHAK member hospitals, who shared valuable insights into internship training, clinical exposure, mentorship, professional growth, and the unique learning experiences available within faith-based healthcare.

Participating hospitals included AGC Tenwek Hospital, PCEA Tumutumu Hospital, AIC Kijabe Hospital, PCEA Kikuyu Hospital, PCEA Chogoria Hospital, Consolata Hospital Nkubu, Maua Methodist Hospital, and AIC Litein Hospital.

Christian Health Association of Kenya (CHAK) conducted a Medical Officer Internship sensitisation session at Kenya Methodist University (KeMU), engaging 32 sixth-year medical students on the internship opportunities available within CHAK's faith-based mission hospitals.

Our long-standing partnership with KeMU has continued to nurture competent, compassionate, and values-driven medical professionals. Since 2018, CHAK has welcomed Medical Officer Interns from the university, contributing to the development of a skilled health workforce for Kenya.

The visit also provided an opportunity to engage the university leadership on strengthening collaboration, including enhancing feedback on intern performance and exploring partnerships in training other health professional cadres.

As part of a three-day Learning Platform, the CHAK Evaluation of Integrated Services (EIS) Project engaged recipients of care to gather their experiences and feedback on integrated service delivery, reinforcing the critical role of community voices in improving the quality and responsiveness of health services.

The Learning Platform brought together intervention facilities from Kiambu and Nairobi counties, alongside the Kitui County Health Management Team (CHMT), to share experiences and lessons from implementing the IMARA Package and integrated service delivery.

Participants reviewed midline facility performance, exchanged best practices, discussed implementation challenges, and identified practical strategies to strengthen integrated healthcare services across participating facilities.

The engagement included visits to Gachororo Health Centre and Gichuru Dispensary, where Community Health Promoters (CHPs) were sensitized on integrated service delivery, further strengthening the link between health facilities and the communities they serve.

Listening to recipients of care and understanding their perspectives is essential to delivering responsive, people-centred healthcare.
By fostering continuous learning, cross-county collaboration, and meaningful stakeholder engagement, CHAK continues to strengthen health systems and support the delivery of quality, integrated health care for all to the Glory of God.

Representatives from the Christian Health Association of Kenya (CHAK), National Council of Churches of Kenya - NCCK, ADS Mount Kenya, and ACME came together to exchange experiences, strengthen collaboration, and reflect on programme implementation during a two-day Brot für die Welt (Bread Bread for the World (BfTW) Partner Learning Exchange convened by Strategic Connections.

The learning exchange provided an opportunity to share best practices, discuss lessons learned, and explore practical approaches to enhancing programme quality, strengthening organizational capacity, and improving the sustainability of development interventions.

A key outcome of the meeting was a by each partner organization to develop or review its Strategy to strengthen financial sustainability and diversify funding sources.

CHAK is currently developing its strategy to guide resource mobilization efforts, foster strategic partnerships, and support the delivery of quality health services.

As part of an ongoing series of trainings, the CHAK-Jamii Tekelezi Project, in partnership with the Nyandarua County Government Department of Health, conducted another session on the Kenya Integrated Guidelines for the Prevention, Treatment and Management of HIV, STIs and Viral Hepatitis, reaching an additional 36 healthcare workers.

This training builds on two previous sessions, further strengthening the knowledge and practical skills of to deliver comprehensive HIV services, improve the management of sexually transmitted infections among the general, key and priority populations, and advance the triple elimination of vertical transmission.

By continuously equipping healthcare workers with up-to-date, evidence-based knowledge, communities are better served through integrated prevention, treatment and management services for HIV, STIs and Viral Hepatitis.

Through sustained with county governments and health sector partners, CHAK continues to strengthen the health workforce and support the delivery of .

Indeed, building a resilient health workforce requires continuous learning and sustained investment in capacity strengthening.
