For people living with HIV who may have questions on whether the Covid 19 vaccines are safe for them, the answer is YES!

The AstraZeneca vaccine currently being administered in Kenya consists of a vector/carrier virus(A chimpanzee adenovirus modified to avoid replication) carrying part of the SARS-Cov-2 DNA, the virus that causes Covid 19.
Once innoculated ,it cannot multiply inside your body.

Secondly some of the study participants during vaccine development were people living with HIV and no untoward reactions were reported in this group.

On Wednesday, March the 24th 2021,the D.R.E.A.M fraternity will join the rest of the global community in commemoration of 'World TB day'.

The theme of World TB Day 2021 - ‘The Clock is Ticking’ –conveys the sense that the world is running out of time to act on the commitments to end TB made by global leaders. This is especially critical in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic that has put End TB progress at risk, and to ensure equitable access to prevention and care in line with WHO’s drive towards achieving Universal Health Coverage.

As we remain vigilant against Covid 19, it's important to remember that TB shares a lot in common with Covid 19 especially in some modes of transmission and early signs symptoms.

Get tested for TB should you experience signs and symptoms such as Cough( of whatever duration), drenching night sweats, unintentional weight loss, fever and chills.

Here's a question whether one is living with H.I.V or not 👇

By Dr.Griffin Mang'uro

"I thought you should know.

So the new injection antiretroviral drug is out. It has been approved and sooner or later it's gonna hit the shelves. I bet in a year's time, it's going to be mainstream. It is a monthly injection and contains two really good quality drugs - Cabotegravir and Rilpivirine. Everybody was extremely excited when initial studies showed some good level efficacy because it meant that HIV positive people would not need to take daily ARVs. But that was two or so years ago, before real differentiated care took on.
Differentiated care means that patients have flexibility in treatment. You don't have to go to the clinic every month to pick your drugs or to see a doctor; the clinic drops the drugs at your local shopkeeper and you pick them on your way home. They are
dropped at the market where you work and you pick them on your way home. Your friend picks them for you when she takes her child for vaccination. They are sent by boda boda to your house and you pay the 50 shillings delivery cost a la Glovo.

Which begs the question, how willing are people to go to clinic for monthly ARV injections when they are used to going to the clinic for routine care once a year?"

From Dr.Griffin Mang'uro

I thought you should know.

Two weeks ago, the WHO approved the roll-out of the Dapivirine ring for HIV prevention for women. This is a soft silicone ring that contains the antiretroviral drug Dapivirine. Women insert it in their vaginas, and it continuously releases small quantities of the ARV (slow-release) over a period of one month. At the end of the month, the women go to hospital to have it changed/replaced.

The ring is worn by women who are HIV negative. The ARV prevents potential infection if the women get exposed to HIV. It is more likely to be useful for women with ongoing risks of HIV such as s*x workers, those with multiple partners or whose partners are known HIV positive (discordant partners). Hopefully, the ring takes us closer to Zero new infections, zero AIDS-related deaths, Zero stigma and zero discrimination by 2030.

Tuberculosis(T.B) has been one of the commonest opportunistic infections among people living with H.I.V. One way of protecting oneself from getting T.B is through taking a daily pill of a drug known as Isoniazid for six( 6) months-IPT(Isoniazid preventive therapy);

However some people find the six months duration too long and either chose not to complete the whole dose or not to start the dose altogether.

The good news is that soon we will be using a combination of two drugs (isoniazid and Rifapentin/Rifampicin) but for a shorter duration of only three (3) months. This mode of treatment is known as Tuberculosis preventive Therapy (T.P.T)

If you are living with H.I.V and have never taken the six months' dose of Isoniazid Preventive therapy(I.P.T) or think you may be at risk of contracting tuberculosis, speak to your health care provider who will address any concerns and answer any questions you may have concerning IPT and TPT.
