Day 2 of the Kenya Health Summit begins with a powerful reflection on the spirit of resilience.

Our Resilience Tree carries personal messages that remind us of what sustains us through life’s challenges: our strengths, coping strategies that work, goals we are working towards, and the things that give us hope.

This simple yet meaningful exercise highlights an important truth: mental health is an essential part of our overall health and well-being. Resilience is not about facing challenges alone; it is about recognising our strengths, building healthy coping mechanisms, seeking support when needed, and holding on to hope.

As we reflect together, we are reminded that building a healthier Kenya requires us to care not only for physical health, but also for the mental and emotional well-being of individuals, families, communities, and health workers.

The messages on our tree represent our collective commitment to resilience, hope, and a stronger, healthier future.

We were honoured to welcome our Board of Directors to the Mathari National Teaching and Referral Hospital booth at the Kenya Health Summit.

In keeping with the Summit’s focus on strengthening Kenya’s health system and advancing better health outcomes for all, the Board took a meaningful moment to engage with our Resilience Tree and Wall of Hope adding their messages of hope and reaffirming the importance of resilience in the journey towards better mental health and well-being.

At Mathari Hospital, we believe that a resilient health system is built not only through innovation and quality care, but also through hope, compassion, dignity, and the strength of people and communities.

Every message placed on our tree is a reminder that hope takes root when we stand together and resilience grows when we care together.

At the Kenya Health Summit 2026, the Mathari National Teaching and Referral Hospital booth welcomed visitors with warmth, openness and genuine human connection.

Beyond the conversations on mental health, these moments remind us that mental healthcare is fundamentally about people creating safe spaces where individuals feel seen, heard, respected and supported.

As Kenya continues to strengthen mental health services and integrate mental health into the broader health agenda, every meaningful interaction matters. A smile can open a conversation, reduce stigma and remind us that seeking help is a sign of strength, not weakness.

The spirit at the Mathari booth reflected the Summit’s commitment to advancing a stronger, more responsive and people-centred health system one where mental health is an essential part of health and well-being for all.

At the Kenya Health Summit, the Occupational Therapy Department engaged numerous visitors who actively participated in the activities showcased at the Department’s booth. This provided an opportunity to demonstrate the diverse therapeutic and meaningful activities that patients participate in as part of their rehabilitation and daily ward programmes.

The Department also exhibited a variety of handcrafted products, including minor crafts and leatherwork, produced by patients during their stay in the wards. The exhibition highlighted the patients’ creativity, skills development, and the important role of occupational therapy in supporting rehabilitation, promoting independence, and enhancing patients’ overall well-being.
