♿ How to Register as a Person with Disability in Kenya

Are you or someone you care for living with a disability? You can apply for official registration with the National Council for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD) through eCitizen. Registration can help you access disability-related government programmes, services, and opportunities.

📝 Step-by-Step Registration Process

1️⃣ Get a Medical Disability Assessment
Visit a gazetted government hospital/public health facility for assessment. A qualified medical practitioner will examine and document the disability using the required medical assessment form.

2️⃣ Get the Report Verified
After the medical assessment, the report should be verified and signed by the County Director of Medical Services (CDMS) as required.

3️⃣ Log in to eCitizen
Visit the eCitizen portal and sign in. If you do not have an account, create one using your details.

4️⃣ Find NCPWD Services
Go to “View All Agencies”, search for National Council for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD), and select the relevant service.

5️⃣ Start Your Application
Select “Register as a Person with Disability” and complete the online application form carefully.

6️⃣ Upload the Required Documents
You will generally need to provide:
📌 Signed/verified medical assessment report
📌 National ID or birth certificate, where applicable
📌 Recent passport-size photograph
📌 Any other documents requested by the application portal

7️⃣ Review & Submit
Check that your personal information and uploaded documents are correct, provide the required consent, and submit your application.

💰 The NCPWD registration application is free.

8️⃣ Wait for Notification & Download Your Certificate
Once your application has been processed, you may receive an SMS notification. Log back into eCitizen to check your application status and, once approved, access your digital PWD Registration Certificate.

🚨 EARLY SIGNS OF CEREBRAL PALSY IN BABIES AND CHILDRENS: What Every Parent Should Know

Have you ever noticed that your baby is not moving like other babies of their age and wondered, “Is this normal, or should I be concerned?” ❤️

Cerebral palsy (CP) can affect movement, posture, balance, and muscle control. The signs can sometimes appear early, although they may vary from one child to another.

👀 Some early signs parents should watch for:

🔹 Delayed developmental milestones: such as difficulty achieving head control, sitting, crawling or walking when expected.

🔹 Unusual muscle tone: the baby may feel unusually stiff or unusually floppy when you hold them.

🔹 Poor head control: difficulty keeping the head steady as the baby grows.

🔹 Persistent, unusual movements or posture: for example, frequently keeping the hands tightly fi**ed, crossing the legs, or maintaining an unusual body position.

🔹 Using one side of the body much more than the other — especially when this difference is noticeable early in development.

🔹 Difficulty with feeding :persistent problems with sucking, swallowing or coordinating feeding may need assessment.

🔹 Difficulty with balance and coordination as the child develops.

⚠️ Important: Having one of these signs does not automatically mean a child has cerebral palsy. Children develop at different rates, and several other conditions can cause similar signs.

❤️ So, what should you do?

Don't panic—and don't blame yourself.

If you notice persistent developmental concerns, talk to a healthcare professional and request a developmental assessment. Early identification and intervention can help a child access the right support as early as possible.

An occupational therapist, physiotherapist, paediatrician and other professionals may work together to assess the child's development and support their abilities.

👉 Parents, your observations matter. You know your child better than anyone.

Does Your Child Constantly Crash, Jump, or Seek Tight Hugs? Understanding Proprioception in Autism.

Have you ever wondered why your child:

✅ Crashes into furniture or people
✅ Loves jumping, climbing, or rough play
✅ Enjoys tight hugs, squeezes, or being wrapped in blankets
✅ Chews on clothing, pencils, or other objects
✅ Seems unaware of personal space
✅ Uses too much or too little force when playing with toys
✅ Appears clumsy or frequently bumps into things

These behaviors may be linked to the proprioceptive sense often called the body's "hidden sense."

What is Proprioception?
Proprioception helps us understand where our body is in space, how much force to use, and how our muscles and joints are moving. Many autistic children process this sensory information differently, which can affect daily activities, play, learning, and self-regulation.

Understanding these sensory needs can help parents and caregivers respond with greater confidence and support.

Remember: These behaviors are often not misbehavior. They may be your child's way of seeking sensory input to help their body feel organized and regulated.

📚 The more we understand sensory processing, the better we can support our children to thrive.

A Parent’s Guide to Sensory Integration Techniques for Autistic Children
Sensory integration techniques can make a big difference in helping autistic children feel calmer, more focused, and better connected to the world around them. These strategies work by supporting how the brain processes sensory input like touch, sound, movement, and light.

Some helpful techniques include: 🌀 Deep pressure activities (weighted blankets, tight hugs) 🎵 Calming or rhythmic music 🪀 Swinging or rocking for vestibular input 🧸 Textured toys and fidgets for tactile exploration 🕯️ Quiet sensory corners to reduce overstimulation

Every child is unique, so it's important to observe what soothes and what overwhelms them.

🧠 MYTHS ABOUT CEREBRAL PALSY: LET’S CLEAR THE DOUBTS ❤️

One of the most painful myths surrounding Cerebral Palsy (CP) is that it is inherited, caused by a curse, or the result of something a mother did wrong.

👉 These beliefs are not true.

Cerebral Palsy is a group of conditions that affect movement, posture, and coordination due to disturbances in the developing brain. It can occur before, during, or shortly after birth. Causes and risk factors may include premature birth, brain injury, infections, stroke, reduced oxygen or blood flow to the developing brain, and other factors affecting brain development.

❌ Cerebral Palsy is not a curse.
❌ It is not a punishment.
❌ It is not caused by witchcraft.
❌ Having a child with CP does not mean the mother is responsible.
❌ Parents should not blame or abandon each other because of these myths.

💔 Mothers of children with Cerebral Palsy need support—not blame.

Fathers, relatives, and society have an important role to play. Instead of asking “What did the mother do?”, let us ask:

❤️ “How can we support this family?”

A child with Cerebral Palsy deserves love, inclusion, early intervention, education, therapy, and opportunities to participate in everyday life.

As Occupational Therapists, we can help children develop functional skills, participate in meaningful activities, and work toward greater independence.

🗣️ LET’S TALK!

Have you ever been stigmatized because of Cerebral Palsy?
Or do you know someone who was blamed, stigmatized, or separated from their partner because of these myths?

👇 Share your experience in the comment section. Your story may help another family realize that they are not alone.

📚 Follow Beyond Function Therapy Place for more educational Occupational Therapy tips, child development information, and disability awareness.

🌱 Let’s replace blame with knowledge, stigma with support, and myths with facts.
